Yeah these days I usually tip delivery drivers pretty well.

Quite a few…

Anything tainted by Murdoch
Wetherspoons
Tesla
Deliveroo
Uber
Air BnB
Brewdog
Starbucks
Costa

There’s more that I’d like to get my arse in gear and leave well alone - pay a little premium for goods if necessary.

Yeah it’s obvious because it’s handy for some people which masks the effect it has on employment conditions for absolutely everybody else.

I struggle with Costa (as well as the elephant in the room - ALL FUEL COMPANIES) through having to drive for work. Those Costa machines are bloody everywhere and if you’re too tired to drive and need a coffee you’re really not blessed with options in many places.

Used to go in Costa in Leicester when I was a kid. We thought it was just a local coffee shop and that the guy working the counter was Mr Costa.

I see entirely where you’re coming from with this Geoff.

I can totally accept that if you’re a cycle courier, you’re probably unconcerned if you’re couriering fish and chips to a hungover party pad, or contracts for signing to a law firm- it’sw ork that will undoubtedly suit a lot of people perfectly (although would be nice if they got sick pay and that…)

However, I do feel a bit icky about the ‘summoning my driver’ p[art, which is quite silly as I’ll order a takeaway from loads of places for delivery by their delivery person without giving it a second thought! (although I do this less often since kicking the booze as I can just nip out in the car to pick it up which is quicker and means HOT FOOD.)

My solution to that is “I’ll eat something else”, but I totally understand why Deliveroo is popular.

Pretty sure my Dad used to tell me Ronald McDonald was in the back office when we went to Maccies.

It’s how I make my peace with it, as I too sometimes feel really icky about having someone bring me my dinner.

I only use Deliveroo when I’m working too late to eat at home and UberEats when I need a hangover cure and cooking/moving is out of the question (deliveroo don’t cover my street).

I used to make sure not to order “artistic” stuff (books, CDs etc.) but didn’t care about technology or boring practical stuff.

Made no sense at all, but worked in my head. Tried to be better lately though.

oh yeah that’s a good one

Absolutely, keep the hate nice and strong. Anything that makes sure other people know the issues around them might still affect their business (slightly …)

must make it quite difficult to eat soup though

Yeah, that’s true. It’s a bit of a killer on a long drive when you’re largely optioned with Costa or Starbucks…

I always stock up before I leave if I can with one for the road at a local independent place and one in a flask for later on as well.

i boycott Ashers, the bakery that wouldn’t make the gay marriage cake. annoyingly found out they provide the dough for a great pizza place so have to avoid that too.

Deliveroo is an awful company guys. If you get hit by a bus you can’t work and if you can’t work you lose your slot in the peak times which means working in these dead slots where nobody orders anything. You don’t get paid to wait for orders. I’ve met people who wanted to go on holiday and when they came back they were put into the dead slots. People get terminated for all sorts of stupid reasons. If you get injured they’re very shitty with their insurance and paying out and people are being forced to cycle around dangerously to try and make orders and are dying because of it.

Deliveroo are particularly generous when they expand somewhere and can be super friendly for a while. Eventually they extend the zone that you’ve got to work in which means cycling further between orders and they slowly lower the wages. I’d avoid fully committing to working for them because from everyone I’ve spoken with the good times don’t last.

4 couriers died in a week a month or so ago.

There’s nothing wrong with working in this sort of job and loads flexibility is great but couriers are dying and finding it increasingly hard to earn decent money soo. Also amazon just invested.

I definitely don’t get buying a burger from one of these services, I can’t imagine they would stand up well to the travel.

Yeah that’s the part I don’t like (which definitely feels distinct to me to ordering a takeaway from a restaurant which employs people to distribute food). I’m not making a moral judgement on others about it either. Also I’ll not order takeaway that comes from more than a mile away these days (easy enough in London). You want that stuff as fresh as possible!

Also the shop beside me has started selling their packaged stuff and some of it looks amazing so I’m really annoyed that they’re massive homophobes

Would imagine there’s probably ways of buying that sort of stuff that means the artist gets more of a cut and/or you might be able to support a local record store of bookshop or something, so it does kinda make sense!
