I’m in the canteen surrounded by strangers so no. If i was at my desk, i could make a guess based on pay scales for the role (which are public) but it wouldn’t be very accurate. I think keeping salaries secret is a great way to ensure that companies can continue paying women and ethnic minorities less.

I’d take a paycut so long-term my workload decreased, absolutely. Honestly think it’s in the best interests of companies, particularly when talking about unskilled or semi-skilled work. I might, being honest, feel differently if i was a solicitor and was getting the same rate as a cleaner, but i’m interested in co-operatives and like the idea of proper rotas in workplaces rather than the delegation of tasks by paygrade.

A couple of people i know who’ve worked for co-operatives, though, suggest that once they get to a certain size they don’t really work, and can, though i don’t know why, just lead to more cliqueyness, infighting and in some cases bullying.

Yeah. I work in HR so for pretty much my entire career, I’ve had access to the full salary, bonus and benefits details of everyone in the organisation. Some put in system blocks to prevent HR people seeing other HR people’s details, but most don’t

Less than me, anyway.

None of my colleagues are in the office at the moment; however, I know what pay band they’re all on and so I could probably work it out (based on years’ experience etc).

Same here… Except when that person is being paid the same as me for the same job but I know, because management told me, that I am far quicker and more accurate in my work than anyone else in the department. and therefore I believe I ought to receive a larger percentage pay rise in the next financial year. I shall certainly suggest it anyway.

I was happier earning 20 per cent less and working just four days a week, I have to admit. However, I need the extra money more nowadays.

That’s when it becomes an issue and it’s a major part of what drove me from my previous work.

They shifted the goal posts in terms of grading structures and accelerated my development so they could get more work out of me for less. In 2 years I’d gone from entry level to having the same responsibility (and with higher expectations) as people who’d been there 10 years. But I was being paid about 75% of what they were.

They did try and offer me a bit more and promised this and that but their original offer was derisory.

It taught me to never, ever trust an employer when it comes to them making promises about pay/role development.
