Just found out that ours takes its name from an archaic local name for the type of trees around here, which came about from folklore connections between said trees and witches.

I had to write to some mug in my old job who had only given us his postocode and door number, so I went on google maps to find the street name, and found that he lived in an area where all the streets were named after Lord of the Rings characters. Now you might think that’d be a cool place to live, but you’d be wrong, as it was in like Sussex or some shit.

I live in a 70s built housing estate. All the roads are named after local aristocracy. :roll_eyes:

One street on the estate is named after the farm that used to be here and the others are named after reservoirs and places around the Elan Valley (eg Rhayader, Tregaron, Claerwen)

That would be because the Elan Valley was turned into a load of reservoirs to provide water for Birmingham, and the waterworks that processes it into council pop is literally across a field from us, so there is more logic to it than it just sounding nice.

I reckon places in the Peak District and Lake District must be the most common theme for housing estates across the country.

Black Lion Street in Brighton is named after the Black Lion Brewery that was founded in 1546. The Black Lion pub that’s there isn’t the original pub (which was further up the road) but is partly made from bits of the brewers after it was knocked down.

My road name is [Something] Lane where [Something] is the name of the original farmland, then village, neither of which really exists anymore. It’s quite a funny word, but unique AFAIK so I won’t be repeating it on here.

There’s a Red Lion Street near here that’s named after a pub (or an old coaching inn originally, I suppose).

Seen stuff like Dog and Duck Lane, but that’s probably to do with Tory pastimes rather than a pub name.

There’s Red Lion street in Manchester also named after a pub, the pub building is still there but has been boarded up for many decades.

I did a whole load of research about the oldest pub in Brighton. If the Black Lion was the original Black Lion, then it could have been a contender. The pub next door - The Cricketers - is probably the building that’s been a pub for the longest, but there’s a couple of other pubs which are in older buildings which haven’t been pubs for quite as long.

There’s also a couple of pubs which make bullshit claims about being the oldest pubs just in the hope that they’ll reel a few tourists in.

There’s a pub in Winchester that claims to be the oldest in England or whatever. Says it’s been there since 1035^. I’m barred because on a slightly boozy night out I politely suggested* that some people in the queue had probably been waiting there ever since.
