what I’d really like is for someone to recommend me an insteresting instrumental band that’s kinda jazzy with a bit of intricate guitar work, nothing too wanky, some pleasant unexpected chord sequences, more clean guitar than distorted, kind of warm moog solos that don’t last too long, mostly major key but not too cheesy, little bit uplifting but more “oooo!” shin strokey.

Any ideas?

like when I discovered Jaga Jazzist but maybe less

I think about the history of it, how different musicians played with one another, record labels, album artwork, musical instruments, drum patterns, different timings, figuring out music theory in my head, how much I need to spend on a record player, record shelves, what happens when you play chords on bass, the effort I need to do that who I play with, when’s my next gig, how was my last gig, what’s that melody I’m hearing, writing lyrics…

I’m still into music but not quite as much as I once was. I still go to gigs about 5 or 6 times a year but when you have kids then the costs can be prohibitive especially with prices for tickets as they are plus travel etc.

I also find that I’m not so bothered by discovering new music…like up to date sounds of now bothering the hit parade and the like…but I do still seek out music that is new to me and generally considered to be good. For example only ever been a casual Smiths listener but recently have been listening to their catalogue non stop. Before that it was Teenage Fanclub. Probs gonna dive in to Yo La Tengo next. So always excited to discover “new” music but just not contemporary new music

fucking love a bit of Jaga Jazzist

not instrumental, but have you ever spent any time listening to Serge Gainsbourg? Try l’histoire de melody nelson, it’s only short

going to go further & as my current ipod only hols 160 GB (not beefed it up yet) then I’ve limited it to a few set artists & playlists of albums from the last 4 years only.

Just gradually running down. I increasingly prefer going home after work to going out.

If I do go out, I almost always have to take the next day off to recover…

Still listen to a lot of new music online, but gigging has dropped right off. This may also be because there are an increasing number of venues that I find too uncomfortable to bother with anymore.

theres a guy at work who fancies himself as keeping up with new music but he posted an article on fb the other day about new young post punk bands with non-white members and said “id also add Bloc Party to this list” as if Bloc Party were less than 10 years old and had made any good music since their third album

Yeah but I’ve never been into much contemporary stuff, not even when I was a teenager. Always been into music before my time and discovering ‘classics’.

Rarely ever go to gigs either. Can’t afford it/don’t really ‘get’ what’s so good about live music. I can count the number of times I’ve been to gigs with one hand. Never bothered learning an instrument either although I wish I could create music.

This is obviously a lie. My whole life is centered around music. I’m in six bands in a variety of genres, I DJ, I write music reviews, I’m learning new instruments and I talk about music with my friends all the time. I normally see about three hundred bands every year and I play forty or fifty gigs a year, maybe more. It’s my favourite thing in the entire world, possibly to the detriment of the rest of my life.

Still love finding new stuff - reckon if I didn’t have Spotify churning out new stuff for me to listen to each week I wouldn’t bother tho!
