Does your computer ever seem to have a mind of its own?

This is the eighteenth in a weekly series where I, Jonathan Frakes, ask the Drowned In Sound community questions taken from the show Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction which I hosted from 1998 - 2002.

Does your computer ever seem to have a mind of its own?
  • Yes, regularly
  • Yes, and a particular anecdote comes to mind which I will tell you about
  • Yes, I’m sure that’s happened to me at least once
  • No, this has never happened to me
  • No, I have never used a computer

Could you explain why it behaved the way it did? How did you feel about the experience? Did you talk to anyone else about it?

The other day at work, I couldn’t right-click on anything, my computer was working super weirdly and it was driving me nuts. I restarted, detached peripherals, googled the symptoms but couldn’t work it out. It ended up costing me too much time and I realised that when I completely detached my laptop, at least it was working OK then.

About four hours after it started, the guy who sat opposite me came back from his meeting and said hello. As I stood up and we made small talk, I noticed two keyboards on his desk, one on top of the other. Turns out that the one on the bottom was connected to the docking station I was connected to, and the one he’d placed on top had been pressing down a couple of keys the whole time. I was relieved to have found the cause, but also a bit furious at the guy for making it happen, and finding it funny rather than being apologetic in any way.

What an anecdote!

How terrifying is it when your computer crashes and does that really loud “BEEP!!!”

I don’t know how all of that pornography got there.

It’s always the tractors

Yes, I blame Bill Gates vaccinating all the computers

My IT teacher in school used to like saying “the only brain a computer has, is the gormless 14 year old sat on the stool in front of it” when somebody in the class would complain that their computer had decided to do something they didn’t like.

And he looked like Dr Robotnik so he definitely knew about computers.
