2005 I was supposedly at uni in Southampton, although I had stopped turning up to any lectures and was just out on the piss most of the time. Dropped out eventually, but knocked about down there in a student house for a few years for the lifestyle anyway. Spent a lot of time at either Lennons, The Joiners or the Wedgewood Rooms (Portsmouth), some very fond memories.

Anyway, this thread has reminded me of a few tunes I’d almost completely forgotten about…

^I was worried this wouldn’t have aged well, but still sounds good

^Never seen this video before, still a tune. Saw them at The Joiners I think, although not on Setlist.fm

^Yeah still ace

^Yeah, it’s alright I guess, pretty sure I saw them at Joiners too

Bloc Party and BRMC both made my best of the century list. British Sea Power and Trail of Dead came close, although both bands have better albums, and I didn’t get into Trail of Dead until later. Still a fan of the Rakes debut (Binary Love is exquisite) and Giant Drag were great - I seem to remember that the drummer / keyboardist left to pursue a career in IT, which is pretty tragic. I would happily have swapped with him if things worked like that.

I remember chatting shit with Eddie Argos from Art Brut, and having a bit of a man crush on Sam Forrest from Nine Black Alps, going a bit silly when they played this one…

Was in love with this track from Tapes n Tapes for a long time:

So I completely fucked it not reading the OP and just posting a bunch of nostalgic drivel earlier. I’m going to vote for a bunch of albums that I keep meaning to dig into more, hardly any of which I had even heard of in 2005 itself…

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Sigur Ros - Takk
Nathan Fake - Drowning in a Sea of Love
MIA - Arular
The Fall - Fall Heads Roll
Danger Doom - The Mouse and the Mask
Boris - Pink
Sleater Kinney - The Woods
Robyn - Robyn

I would have included Low - The Great Destroyer, but there is alread a Low listening club on the go!

Is there a deadline @guntrip?

I do these things better if I know there’s a time limit.

Looking back on a lot of these, what a year 2005 was. Cant wait.

In no particular order, aside from the first nine being no-brainers:

Silversun Pickups - Pikul
The National - Alligator
Billy Corgan - The Future Embrace
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
Death Cab for Cutie - Plans
Sleater-Kinney - The Woods
QOTSA - Lullabies to Paralyze
Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary
Boris - Pink
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl

Some others, many of which could have easily gotten that tenth spot:

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - S/T
Trail of the Dead - Worlds Apart
Sigur Ros - Takk
Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy (the extended version)
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
Jimmy Chamberlin Complex - Life Begins Again

I really, really hope Pikul and The Future Embrace get chosen, not enough people know how amazing they are.

What a great year. And it’s not just nostalgia, I only knew of 4 of those 19 albums at the time.

I left out Pikul on the arguable/arbitrary basis that it’s a mini-album. Definitely amazing, though. Got very strong memories of listening to it on the way to work having spent the morning in hospital with my wife and our newborn son.

1 boris - pink (this would probably be no1 just for the last track alone)

2 eluvium - talk amongst the trees

3 jesu - jesu

4 boards of canada - the campfire headphase

5 sleater kinney - the woods

6 jeromes dream - completed

7 sunn o))) - black 1

8 prurient - black vase

9 hypermagic mountain - lightning bolt

10 wives - erect the youth problem

Some tough competition for no10. 15 year old me would probably give me a smack for not including bloc party, but you know, the subsequent 14 years of constant disappointment is hard to separate from it.

My favourite album from 2005 is Tender Buttons by the wonderful band Broadcast.

I think it’s practically perfect in every way.

Do with that information what you wish! :upside_down_face:

David Thomas Broughton: a complete guide …
Smog: a river ain’t too much …
Okkervil river: black sheep boy
Jens lekman: you’re so silent, Jens (a compilation, but ace)
Brakes: give blood

Must have been something in the water as I don’t think any of these artists ^ have released anything as good before or since 2005.

These bands have release something better but all mighty fine albums and would make up the rest of my albums of ‘05:

Dirty three: cinder
Hood: outside closer
Electrelane: axes
Silver Jews: tanglewood numbers
