I don’t know, just how I feel when I think “maybe I should watch The Wire again”. Not sure if it would feel dated. Not sure I could cope with Dom West’s accent.

IDK I hear a lot more about Sopranos from more casual TV fans than I do The Wire, and multiple Sopranos books have come out lately. Also it had a lot more impact on shows that followed it - which I suppose could either lift it higher since it was more referenced or make The Wire seem even more unique and like a true one-off.

I rewatched it for the first time in about 10 years fairly recently, and it was still incredible. Was really worried it wouldn’t be as good as I remember it being, but it was.

And whilst the last series doesn’t stand up to the rest of it, it was actually quite a bit better the second time around. Might have been a case of diminished expectations due to knowing it wasn’t as good as the rest, but I now think it’s more of a case of 1-4 being so good that it feels like a big drop in quality when it would still be a very good season of most other telly programmes.

Thank you, as always, Colin! These threads are dead good IMO

“We’re going straight to the mad, mad men” is how I imagine the theme song to go

Hahahahahaha just thought of something.

So basically I’d been watching Breaking Bad at the world’s slowest pace (because it’s so difficult to binge watch by being a massive bummer all the time). Went to visit my friend in Amsterdam BECAUSE WE WERE MEANT TO BE BANGING and we ended up watching a few episodes of series 4 late at night in his flat INSTEAD OF BANGING and after the episode we watched on the last night I instigated a conversation to find out what was going on and basically his attraction to me massively fluctuated and so we DID NOT BANG and I was in a very bad place at the time so it sort of broke me a bit and there were lots of tears :frowning: so I have not watched an episode of Breaking Bad since because it reminded me of a very painful evening.

however WE RECENTLY FINALLY BANGED and so the bad memory has been consigned to the dustbin of past sadnesses and I can finally finish watching Breaking Bad!

I don’t think that this is true. I think it had a different kind of cultural discussion around it.

The Wire wasn’t shown on terrestrial TV until the final series, which meant that it was much more of a web-driven word of mouth phenomenon. The Sopranos has a much bigger and wider cultural impact, but it also had less of a kind of secret club enthusiasm within its fandom. The likes of Charlie Brooker were the first to champion the series over here. It seems hard to believe, but it was possible for HBO to put out a David Simon series in the US and for it to pass relatively unnoticed in the UK for a couple of years.

Voted for 5 in the top 10, and then nothing until #30. Interesting …

i actually like AJ most of the time but he is definitely one of the most complained about things in the show

He is fucking hilarious.

In the middle of a rewatch at the minute and I had completely overlooked how funny his interactions with Tony are the first time round.

This specific bit absolutely killed me

“What are you fuckin’ stupid, huh?”

Somehow missed the votening for this. I suspect my scores would have had minimal effect:

1: Sopranos
2: The Wire
3: Thick of It
4: Always Sunny
5: Peep Show
6: Breaking Bad
7: Rick and Morty
8: West Wing
9: BoJack Horseman
10: Deadwood

Half way through first series of Succession on an illness-facilitated binge-watch and honestly, Deadwood should be feeling nervous…

…also, every single program on my list is about objectively awful people except the west wing, isn’t it? Not sure what that says about me.
