Is anyone here savvy at addressing issues on Wikipedia?
Someone weirdly went in and removed all the mentions that DiS is still going (looking at the user’s history they’ve made many edits to the page and tried to delete the entire page at one point) and reverted back to it being closed with last tense.
Plus it’s now solely owned by me, and Murdoch only owned 40% of BSKYB so it’s a bit weird that his name is on there (and technically we just got an advance of a years worth of advertising to launch the Quietus, The Lipster and Thrash Hits)
Probably lots of other edits needed, including mentions of the community that would probably be useful
I know it’s not ethical for me to make edits so wondering if anyone can help?
It absolutely is ethical for you to make the changes yourself, and no-one is better situated to make the case that the site is back again than its founder.
I see from the history that you’re currently making the changes anonymously while not logged in, that will explain why people don’t believe your changes. I suggest creating an account, populating it as much as possible to make it clear that you are Sean Adams himself, then making the changes (including an explanation as to how it ended and how it’s back on the page itself) and making it clear in your change comments that you are the primary source.
I don’t think I’ve ever changed it. I have a wiki account as the Anchoress was being smeared on hers and there was once an an abusive page set up about me. Was also someone impersonating me doing edits. So I kinda fear ever touching it and was told you can’t edit anything to do with yourself?
There’s a lot of talk about not editing things to do with yourself in terms of impartiality, but I feel like in a case like this where you’re making targeted, specific amendments which are clearly not just done hyperbolically would be ok. The main thing is to be transparent so that anyone looking back at the change log can see everything with full disclosure.
I could be talking out my arse though, sorry to hear you’ve had a shitty experience with it in the past.
It’s not so much that you can’t do it, but you have to be careful with how you approach it.
It would be useful for you to go on the article’s talk page with your account, declaring that you’re Sean Adams and giving a purely factual summary of DiS’s history as you see it - ideally with 3rd part sources linked - on there.
One of the issues you’re probably facing is that the primary source about DiS - Drownedinsound.com - declares at the top of every page “this site has been archived and is closed”, so you need to very clearly articulate on the talk page what Drowned In Sound currently is and where (again, avoid promo speak, just say “this is what DiS currently does after reactivating in 2023, and this is where we now are”)
I updated the page a bit, let’s see if it lasts. I never know when editing Wikipedia pages because there are so many rules, but hopefully the “is” rather than the “was” remains.
I notice if you click on “About” on the Drowned in Sound homepage, it takes you directly to this Wikipedia article. They are clearly using this WIkipedia page as an extension of their website publicity. Particularly because of this (but also because it has been tagged for cleanup for 4 years) I think anything vaguely promotional and unsourced needs to be removed. They really need to get their act together and complete their website properly!
Happy to help, added those citations too (two of them I couldn’t use because they are references back to DiS itself, so I found the actual webpages referencing the win and linked those instead).
