Cheers, likewise.
I could easily have put Rehearsing My Choir, Blueberry Boat or I’m Going Away too but Widow City was the first one I heard so it’s the one I have to like the most now (it’s the law)

Narrowing down my list of 58…

Lloyd Cole eh? must investigate. Glad he’s still around.

Gonna need to relisten to a few of Mogwai’s albums to remember which is which

From this century, its hardcore will never die. Although the latest one was decent too

WAIT. Happy Songs is like 2003 isn’t it!

Given how much of a post-rock phase I had, for years and years, feel like my list needs to represent that even though I never listen to that now

Yeah Happy Songs and Hardcore are both close to my 20. Rock Action was 2001 as well!

This is exactly how I’m feeling, it was all I listened to for ages but a little bit removed from it, it’s hard to remember which album was which.

I was so deeply into 65dos for a while there but don’t go back to them much either. They were my go-to band to prove how interesting and unique my music taste was. Glad to see I’m above that sort of pointless point scoring now …

Best albums OF THE 2000s

  1. Circle Take The Square – As the Roots Undo (2004)
The record that’s had the greatest impact on me of all time. Became aware of it because of the vocals on the 65dos ‘Conspiracy of Seeds’ track and they blew me away. Was a lifechanging record for me musically as, up to that point, I hadn’t really liked anything ‘heavy’ or with screamed vocals. This was my gateway drug to whole new genres of music. Also lifechanging (or at least life-supporting) personally because I had a REALLY shit 2006/7 and this was the record I would reach for again and again and again to get me through. My most vivid memories of connecting with this record are listening to it in the dark as I walked to an evening councilling session in freezing cold January.

  2. Madvillain – Madvillainy (2004)

  3. Converge – Jane Doe (2000)

  4. Songs: Ohia – The Lioness (2000)*

  5. Run The Jewels – RTJ2 (2014)

  6. Talons’ – Songs for Babes (2009)**

  7. Stars of the Lid – And Their Refinement of the Decline (2007)

  8. P J Harvey – Let England Shake (2011)

  9. Joanna Newsom – Have One on Me (2010)

  10. Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Lift Yr Skinny Fists (2000)

  11. Radiohead – In Rainbows (2007)

  12. Sigur Ros – () (2002)

  13. Isis - Panopticon (2003)

  14. Sufjan Steves – Illinoise (2005)

  15. Mount Eerie, Julie Dorion, Fred Squire – Lost Wisdom (2007)

  16. Grouper – Ruins (2014)

  17. Sleater Keaney – The Woods (2005)

  18. Swans – The Seer (sorry) – (2011)

  19. Big Thief – UFOF (2019)

  20. Father John Misty – I love you Honeybear (don’t @ me alright?) (2015)

*Just sneaks into the ‘century’; only checked it on the off chance, thought it was 90s. Wonder if anyone is going to need to change their lists now…?

**not to be confused with Talons without the apostrophe.

Rock Action is a bit patchy though imo, couple of amazing songs coupled with a bit of meh

I went through my CDs last night (haven’t purchased a CD since 2012), and narrowed it down to 100 and only got to S in the alphabet. This doesn’t include my vinyl collection, or online albums

It might be a bit niche now, but it was the soundtrack to a tricky part of my life. He’s a still a great lyricist. Off to see him at Union Chapel next month. Still selling out 2 nights.

You’ve got a few of my ‘almosts’ there NY
