Tasty list. Love to see Nothing Important so high - don’t know how he does it but it kind of hits in a way that makes other music seem a bit pale. St Vincent self titled as well! Be interested to hear why you rate that above Actor and Strange Mercy. That Earth record is my current go-to for guitar transcendence, only got into it fairly recently but can see how it could become a big part of your listening life

Blimey that was tough. Pretty sure I’ve got the top 8 right and I’d feel the same had i the time to revisit everything. Beyond that though, fuck knows. Anyway…

ooh this probably deserved a place on mine somewhere, only got into it last year though after not getting the fuss around it at the time

This exact run of albums were all ones I had to cut from my list in the 20-30s.

I’ve reached the point in this process where all music has become completely devoid of meaning except for early 2000s pop-punk. Is this a sign that I’ve reached enlightenment? Or that I am, at my core, trash?

Perhaps both?

Speaking purely for myself, I’d say it has better songs on it but I know this is controversial

Makes perfect sense though. I know that records I love from the early 2000s have stood the test of time but much as I love UFOF I have no idea if I’ll still be listening to it in twenty years

Thanks.

I listened obsessively to Nothing Important for a while, but I don’t think I can explain why it’s good to any satisfying level. Combination of his voice, his lyrics, the way the song Nothing Important gets more and more impenetretable the longer it goes on then just comes back to the chorus at the end, lots of reasons.

I heard the self-titled St Vincent first, which might have something to do with it. But also, I just think it’s better (searing analysist there, I know!).

The Bees Made Honey… just gets better the deeper you get into it. Hung From The Moon would probably be up there for a track of the 2000s for me.

These aren’t actually my top 2 albums of the last decade (though they may both make my top 40) but making a real list is too hard!

Couldn’t name 10 albums

I hear @epimer’s been keeping a list of potential titles if that helps.

I wrote a long list in Excel of about 100 > then without letting myself give it too much thought rated them all out of 10 > found I had about 45 10s, so filtered out everything lower than that so i couldn’t see them and they wouldn’t tempt me again > kept re-scoring the 10s and refiltering until I only had 20 left > ranked the final 20.

It turns out that compiling a top 20 albums list and naming a child are very similar processes if you’re a data geek…
