Durham.

Any good coffee or food tips for Durham?

Make sure you pronounce it as it’s spelled. Too many out-of-towers make the mistake of going for ‘durrum’ or similar. Schoolboy error.

It’s been a few years since I last went but Flat White used to be the only place for great coffee, and Flat White Kitchen do good food as well - they’re a couple of minutes apart, just up from the market square.

Vennels cafe for more traditional tea, sandwiches and cake type thing (my Grandparents loved this place).

Riverview Cafe do breakfast and lunch options although only been for a coffee before, looked pretty good though.

Bean to Brew opened in the indoor market a little while ago and people seem to rate it.

Coarse’s tasting menu is decent value - think it’s around £40 for six courses.

Fat Hippo for burgers is alright. La Spaghettata is a decent enough homely Italian that’s been around for decades. There’s some good Indian restaurants, Spice Lounge is generally reliable.

Nice! Bit jealous too - grew up in Durham but haven’t been back for a couple of years now. Seeing any of the sights while you’re there?

Yeah, Christmas shopping and tourism! Although we now live only 45 mins away, it’s all new to us!

Durham used to have quite a few surprisingly great fish and chip shops.

Best one was below a small little music venue called The Fishtank where I played at and went to loads as a kid. They shared the back stairs with the kitchen so the place always stank of batter, and it had a dumbwaiter which could theoretically bring you up a box of fish and chips mid-gig.

If you’re still there, then Barrio Comida is an absolutely banging Mexican place. Proper tacos, incredible cocktails, I’d detour to go back there (even though I don’t even drink nowadays).

If you get the opportunity to swing by Beamish on the way back, then all the Christmas decorations will be up.

(will be very busy today, mind)
