Cave paintings were literally my first thought for one of the earliest but then I thought they were more story telling and entertainment no? Not repeating the same thing intentionally or variants on a theme.

Kind of impossible to say what they for, or even if they had a purpose (be that didactic or whatever). I’m sure they that once they were done the idea was replicated though, which is I guess is the core idea of a meme (though let’s not chat about Dawkins here).

do you think the stations of the cross is a meme?

Hmm, I imagine the common adoption of that as a form of devotion was mainly a top-down development from the Church, which took its inspiration from the Bible, so I don’t think it would have replicated in the kind of way that would make it a meme.

Not sure if this is even a meme, but caps seemed a popular “humour” vehicle
