I love the utopian idea that eBay has humans in customer services.

Interesting twist in the tale:

The buyer paid for the item but then said they did it accidentally and asked for a refund. Interestingly this seems to have close my unpaid item case which means I’ll no longer be able to claim back the fees. I refunded them the money for the item anyway but I’ll probably have to lodge a case with ebay this point since it doesn’t appear that I’m able to cancel the transaction since it’s still registered as paid

Can’t help but wonder if this was deliberate and if so, got to give them props at this point since they’ve essentially managed to not pay for the item and extricate themselves of any consequences.

Did you process the refund properly through PayPal? In this case, in an hour or so the transaction will show up as ‘refunded’ rather than ‘paid’, all fees will be cancelled, and the refund will include the cut that PayPal takes.

Yep I went into the transaction and refunded it and it shows up as refunded, it actually looks as though it refunds paypals fees as well.

The UIC is still listed as closed though, which is technically correct as they did pay for it which would close the case, they just asked for a refund afterwards.

Edit: Looks like a couple of people have done this for exactly this reason https://community.ebay.com/t5/Selling/How-to-cancel-a-transaction-after-Unpaid-Item-Case-closed/qaq-p/27063851/jump-to/first-unread-message

Another update spoke to Ebay who were actually super friendly, and the rep basically knew what was going on straight away. They just wanted me to confirm that they buyer had received the refund before they could look into refunding final value fees.

Trying to sell the same switch again, two days person hasn’t paid and no communication :expressionless: If it doesn’t sell this time I might just keep it and look for some decent games or something.

If it does happen again I might well be interested…pm me :grinning:

This is just a convoluted sales pitch, isn’t it? Clevergirl

Will do! Looks like the chap has pretty decent feedback so I’ll probably wait until tomorrow before filing an unpaid item case.

Nintendo Switch it’s so good that you’ll always find someone to bid on it but not pay for it afterwards :+1:

Late to the original question but I’d have just paid the fees and be done with it because I’d rather do that than deal with the resultant wrangling. That’s the kind of idiot I am.

Just found out the opposite of caveat emptor is caveat venditor so some good has come of all this at least.

Yeah I get where you’re coming from, if this hadn’t happened a few times for other items I’d probably be fine with it but when you start racking up fees for stuff you haven’t actually sold it’s a bit :expressionless:.

Also it did irk me a little that they won the bid over someone who might have actually paid for it.

i sold my switch on ebay with no issues. sorry wewo!

Ah yeah I was placing that in the context of how often I sell stuff on eBay. As in once every 2 years probably. But yeah the right thing to do is to let them have a black mark against them, when you buy something on eBay you’re signing a contract which commits you to the purchase of the item. But if this happened to me regularly I’d not give the buyer the benefit of the doubt no way.

have you reached out to them yet?

Yep sent them an invoice yesterday and sent them a reminder today.

I’m trying to see if I can get them to let me cancel (if they’re not going to pay) rather than file the unpaid item case because I think the latter option means they don’t get a black mark and I don’t pay listing fees.

oh fuck man. people can be real shits, huh.

best of luck!

Yeah the whole thing is kind of a head scratcher as I didn’t realize there were so many ways to get out of paying for items once you’d won them.

i feel like you’re being way too nice about all this. mark em as unpaid buyer strikes and move on. no mercy!
