He is the best. It’s pretty sad he survived the trenches of WWI and then died of Spanish flu. Every time I go to Vienna for work I go and see his paintings again at the Leopoldsammlung. He’s also one of those painters who is even better to see in real life rather than reproduction, as the backgrounds of his paintings tend to be thick impasto, and the figures smoother, but still with a texture.
I got this very heavy book about 10 years ago. It was a good buy.
Yep, all time favourite number one. I was lucky enough to be in Budapest a few years ago at the same time they had a big retrospective of his work on, it was amazing. Also some of his drawings were at the Courtald last year (?). Such perfect lines, creepy knobbly hands and legs, etc. I’ve got that book too, lovely stuff.
They certainly picked the right painting for that cover.
I was at the Leopold when they had this weird little event to celebrate them getting a new painting of one of Schiele’s girlfriends. They hung up a portrait of each them in the main reception, and has this weird sickly “true love re-united” event. Definitely not fitting with Schiele!
Went to Vienna a few months ago and loved the Leopold, including all of the Schiele/Klimt stuff. I know very little about art and it’s not usually my thing but I really enjoyed it.
