It’s a schwa, an unstressed syllable. These are commonly misspelt with the vowel being wrong as it isn’t sounded out when the word is pronounced (e.g. ‘independent’ is often spelt ‘independant’, ‘sentence’ is spelt ‘sentance’ etc)
