Android being latest adopters means that often they get things super late, but also the fact that when they finally do get it, the nerds who do it have done a Theo and taken the name as literally as possible and ignored the fact that people interpret and often amend/reuse emojis in different ways.

Basically, more people are going to use an emoji to be sassy/showing a hair flip than they are to show someone ‘holding an invisible tray’ or being a help desk person.

I know you’re joking but the Android ones are terrible, ugly things and also come out much later, so…

I can’t believe you fell for the Android thing, tbh. Although I feel bad for essentially setting you up for that yesterday (unintentionally - I just thought this was too obviously a joke). So maybe we’re even.

Like you actually bothered to point out Android were late to the party?

??

u wot

I mean also you seem to be totally I’m-Theo-I-live-under-a-rock-and-only-go-on-the-internet-to-code-or-be-contrarian-on-DiSbook clueless about everything else, so feels pretty reasonable

Other reply, sorry.

It’s fine for people to interpret these as they like: My point is that it’s not of much use when used with lots of different people, instead of friends who know what you might mean.

:’( now you’re just reminding me of Carrie Fisher’s amazing Emoji writing.

or globally, culturally-defined, accepted norms?

Amongst the Apple elites, maybe (surprised to find @penoid in that group TBH ;)) but for others no.

the massively ubiquitous, most popular selling phone globally ‘elite’ which has therefore permeated facebook, twitter and numerous other platforms, you mean?

Android historically has been in much bigger use than iOS. It may be changing now (the most recent figures I could find were 2015 Q4 but it’s hard to judge. Apple phones are more expensive than Android phones.

except most people are getting them on contracts, which are the same cost, but just committing to longer ones. I’d say the more ‘elite’ attitude I encounter comes from Android users than Apple users tbh

My wife keeps using the new pregnant emoji after she’s eaten something nice and is a bit full. I was fucking terrified the first time she used it. Imagine finding out you were having a child through the medium of the emoji.
