Yeah, I watched the Hasan minhaj episode on it the other day, and unfortunately as much as he tried, it was just a very superficial look (although tbf it’s a very complex country with so many different ideologies)

Modi is a terrible populist, nationalist neoliberal who isn’t afraid to enact policies gun in hand. He objectively hasn’t done well in his term - reduction in unemployment, reduction in corruption and development of infrastructure that he promised has not come to fruit… It was looking like his pull was waning, but with troubles in Kashmir coming to. A head again, it’s allowed him to go back to his Hindu nationalist, chest beating rhetoric that his base and lots of low information votes lap up

If they try it’ll end up like when the entire shadow cabinet tried to force Corbyn out.

I mean it was fucking hilarious then, them all no confing him and him just saying “fuck you”

The Grauniad did actually bring up that back then, Corbyn felt empowered to do so because he knew the Labour Party membership overwhelmingly backed him… May does not.

At least we know what the main headlines will be tomorrow in our completely impartial press

Cornwall’s gonna go red in the next election. 50% of it anyway. Big prediction from me.

I thought successful elections removed the need for a bloodbath?

Was Tito’s Yugoslavia totalitarian?
Sergej Flere*, Rudi Klanjsek
Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor, Slovenia

abstract
State authorities in Croatia and Slovenia have recently indiscriminately designated Tito’s Yugoslavia as totalitarian without reservations. Neither of these authorities referred to any systematic considerations of totalitarianism, nor did they analyze the manner of the alleged system’s presence and its time limits. The current paper indicates that, from the middle of the 60s, millions of copies of religious newspapers were published and economic enterprises operated beyond the state command economy. In addition, the republics were largely autonomous players and catered for their own interests. Although Tito’s cult was promoted, his power was limited by the federal nature of the state. Neither any other elements of totalitarianism could be found.

Was considering the constant vitriol against Corbyn from various leftwingers in my FB friends and recalling how truly bad the Miliband tenure was. I mean I like Ed, I had high hopes when he was elected, but god what a shambles of an opposition it was. Never recall seeing people defend Miliband particularly at the time but feels like people are so much more angry about Corbyn. Depressing.

Definitely, definitely happened. Plenty of people weren’t phased by his racist mugs and didn’t mind the Edstone.

this is good

not seen the numbers but would not surprise me based on my experience if a decent % of the FvD voters were middle class yuppies

According to the article below, they are mostly

  • male
  • at least 35 but over represented by 65+ too
  • lower than average educated
  • living in the city

thanks. not as drastic and less young than I thought but the spread of their voters is still kinda scary

Around 29 percent of FvD voters are highly educated. That is lower than the average (35 percent), but high for a European radical right-wing party.

also this linked underneath

What is striking is that the Forum for Democracy scores well in both large cities and in more rural areas, a trend that was already apparent in the 2017 parliamentary elections. "You can’t do that as a one-day fly. That is a model for growth, "says Joost Smits, electoral behavior expert at the Political Academy.

I always thought Ed was alright but allowed himself to be dragged to the centre(right) by the same mugs who convinced Gordon to smile and mentally scarred an entire generation. The mugs who still seem baffled that no one wanted more of the same in the ensuing leadership elections and if only we could have had one more dose of vaguely racist blandery the Tory party would have waved the white flag and declared Labour eternal winners by now.

Please stop saying mugs and Ed at the same time. It’s still sore.

For what it’s worth (very little) I think Ed seems like a decent enough sort. Just not cut out to be leader. And he suffered from being overhyped (Red Ed, etc, but fair play for overhauling the union membership = automatic affiliation thing).

That was a Tory attack line, not one that was used to hype him up

It was happily co-opted by many as a selling point.
