Points of order
- I’ve seen/read some reports that England played badly in the first half? That’s only true for the last five minutes only, imo. They knew Mexico’s plan is always to overwhelm in that first 20 or so minutes, so to get to that point without any major chances was job done. Then they get two quick fire goals before conceding and looking shaky until half time. I’d give the first half B+.
- Even despite the problems in the last three games, I felt fairly strongly that this wasn’t the stodge of 2024, and I’m glad this game happened because it just ramps up the investment so much more. The connection with the fans is fueled by the attitude shown. It wasn’t about an amazing attacking display or complete control either, sometimes just being involved in an absolute dinger is enough.
- Sad for Henderson, it’s a bit less funny knowing he’s seriously injured and in hospital, it might be more comedic in time. In a weird way, I’m kind of glad it’s that moment that will be seen as the “dampener”…because otherwise the focus is on Tuchel’s weird comments about the ref, who got a few little things wrong but not the big decisions

6 days until the next game, while agonising, might mean James has a chance to be back? Also good to get more rest into Rice…although tbf I think he looked the least cooked he has all tournament last night.

James being back would be incredibly helpful given the threat of Sorlot, Nusa and Schelderup from out wide. Otherwise I would probably move Konsa and bring in Stones or Burn to play against Haaland. Stones would probably be my first choice.
I’d also hope we’d appeal to have the Quansah red suspension suspended, similar to Balagun. They’ve set a precedent now.

They were fairly terrible/2nd best for the first 30 mins. Mexico controlled the game.
The 2 quick goals masked this, quite significantly.
I think this is overblowing it a bit. We weren’t getting our game really clicking, but we weren’t blown off the pitch either.

Thought the first 20 was basically what you want from a team in a situation like that. Pickford made one decent save that was an excellent header, other than that we kept them at arms length and took as much of the sting out of the atmosphere as possible. Their best chance of winning was always going to be a quick start and we stopped them from having one fairly effectively

Yeah we did some decent falling over and timewasting in the first 20.

Think having Saka and Gordon back over Madueke and Rashford was a massively underrated part of this. Both probably have higher ceilings going forward anyway and had key moments on the break for the first and third, but arguable as importantly they were a huge part of that defensive effort for the first half hour.

Didn’t seem to have a dedicated holding guy first half. A lot of rotating a center back, Anderson, rice, a full back. Second half it seemed Rice was going to actually sit. That would’ve been nice to see.
