Ennio Morricone RIP

I love everything Morricone did, whether it was romantic themes or the more light-hearted stuff or the spine-chilling Thing soundtrack. But this compilation is still incredible, benchmark experimental music

Read the other day that The Thing won the Razzie for worst soundtrack. I mean how is it possible to be that wrong.

That’s a great compilation isn’t it.

I mean it is some seriously dissonant stuff, you have to be open to aural assault but even so amazing

Watched The Good, The Bad and The Ugly a few weeks ago (it’s on my GOAT list as is Once Upon A Time In The West) and was once again spell blinded by its magic. I love it so much and of course the soundtrack in this case is just as important as the film itself.

One of my earliest music memories was my dad playing his Ennio Morricone records.

Thought I’d post a few favourites that I don’t think have been mentioned so far:

The Battle of Algiers - completely different style to anything else I’m aware of that Morricone has done. If you haven’t seen the film do so, it is a stunning piece of work and the soundtrack is an absolutely essential element of the power of the film.

Lolita (the remake). With a couple of exceptions (e.g. Once Upon a Time in America) I have tended to gravitate towards Ennio’s 60s and 70s work and not his more Hollywood style work in the 80s onwards but I’m beginning to discover some absolute gems. This is a case in point, just absolutely beautiful. If you listen to the album don’t listen (or edit out) the version with non-Ennio tracks as they really break up the power of the album.

Il Clan dei Siciliani - just pure classic Ennio themes here.

Vergogna Schifosi - think lots of you will recognise this even if you don’t recognise the name. Classic Ennio,

Escalation - this is the wildest Ennio album I’ve come across. It’s like one giant, mad mash-up of all his different styles crammed into one frantic album.

Il Grande Silenzio - Snow bound spaghetti western. One of my all time favourite films and scores

Exorcist II - terrible film, amazing soundtrack

I could go on and on and on…but I’ll leave it that.

The Maestro.
