i genuinely don’t know how i coped before having notifications tbh

i remember trawling around at night trying to remember what threads i’d made a good post in earlier to see if i’d got any thisses. dark days.

Idk I just think old DiS had much more character and greater possibilities; there was a bit more diversity in the sorts of threads and regular posters (moker, inside-outside) and even just the font/format and pale grey background were nicer looking. New DiS feels a bit like Facebook sometimes. I don’t really like the fact we have pictures next to our names, it was more impersonal and funnier without this.

That’s not to say I don’t like new DiS but it just feels like there’s something missing. If I’m honest I don’t fully understand why old DiS had to close down. I thought it was supposed to be a rumour started by umlaut_ampersand, which turned out to be completely false?

No, that part was a running joke which ended up getting a bad reaction when it reached sean (as apparently advertisers had seen and believed it or something?)

The reason old DiS closed was the servers were costing sean an absolute fortune as they were hosted on the DiS site itself. This one is hosted externally by Discourse so running costs are lower.

Pretty sure the old DiS was costing @sean a fortune to maintain and host.
Personally I hardly ever posted on the old forums as it seemed a lot more cliquey back then and harder to navigate. I far prefer the new DiS.

Everyone seems so much nicer on here too.

but yeah you’re allowed to prefer the old boards of course. i enjoyed posting on there for a long time and it had a lot of positives, i also miss a lot of old posters though i don’t think the changeover is necessarily responsible for them leaving (although some will have found it a good jumping off time)

it felt weird changing over at first but now i far prefer the functionality here, even just being able to search for stuff properly.

i think a key thing is that old DiS felt more anonymous and new DiS feels more personal, and people will be divided on which of those options they prefer.

i agree with @ynot though as well that old DiS could feel quite cliquey. might sound silly but i posted there very regularly for a few years but still tended to feel like a bit of an outsider a lot of the time, and have felt more ‘part of the community’ since moving to the new boards i think

not sure why you needed to @ sean there. just making sure he sees that a few idiots still prefer the old site or what?

Lost of all respect for japes for not knowing how this works.

I’m not sure I’d entirely agree with that tbh. I think there is actually quite an oppressive dominant herd mentality on this new place that nobody really wants to mess with, whereas I think on the old boards there was a bit more acceptance of people with slightly different opinions/views (I mean actual Tories used to post there). Those sorts of people are outnumbered and don’t really post on here anymore.

I’ve had some shit on here for not responding to advice and wanting such threads I made deleted because in hindsight I didn’t feel comfortable with revealing some personal information about myself on a public forum (some of those threads still exist and I don’t feel comfortable that they’re still there, at the same time I don’t have the confidence to ask for them to be removed). That sort of mentality - telling people off for not responding to you - would have been unheard of on the old boards. That’s the sort of thing I really don’t like about new DiS.

Think you’re missing their point here. No one was telling you off purely for not replying to them.

It was more that you would start a thread asking for advice, people would go to the effort of typing out a long, thoughtful, helpful post, you’d not acknowledge any of those replies at all and then start an identical thread a week later asking for advice on the same thing again. I can see why people would feel like they’ve wasted their time trying to help.

This post isn’t designed to get at you, just think you’re unfairly misrepresenting people’s motivations and intentions here in a way that won’t earn you any goodwill.

Yes but ugh, this is another thing that gets me about the new place. Half the time I’m not even explicitly asking for anyone’s advice, ok on some threads I have, but usually I’m having a grumble and a rant often in the hope of starting a potentially quite interesting thread where we all share similar anecdotes and it’s potentially quite amusing, and not to be taken too seriously. Why doesn’t that happen anymore on new DiS? Last time I did that on here I got told that I’m a basically child and that I need therapy, bolstered with 12 likes. Can’t really help but think old DiS was much more laid back in that sense.

The only things I miss are

  • Links to ^this-ing a post where people would involuntarily this a post. That was good
  • threading allowing for stuff to get funnier by repetition - I don’t think Dental Plan would work as well on the new boards, but then everyone just posts via frinkiac anyway so :woman_shrugging:

i dunno, i think it’s developed into quite a nice and supportive place and a lot of people find that quite helpful, so naturally when a thread pops up where someone seems like they’re looking for help or advice people will try to help them. i think it’s a good atmosphere and people get a lot out of it. people don’t know you’re just doing it for a bit a grumble unless you make it obvious. if i’m just after a general grumble i stick it in the daily thread or another relevant rolling thread or whatever. if you make a thread saying “how can i be more ____?” it’s not other peoples’ fault for taking that at face value and trying to be supportive.
