Scraps is a term used in England which refers to deep-fried batter that is left over in the fryer as a by-product of frying fish and is served as an accompaniment to chips.[1] They are traditionally served free of charge with chips in fish and chip shops,[2] although some places charge for the scraps. In some parts of the North, they are referred to as ‘bits’ or ‘dubs’. In most parts of the South West it’s commonly known as ‘Gribbles’.[3] They can be found in Leeds.[4]

It’s a frequent source of disappointment for me when I visit home that we get a chippy takeaway “for a treat” while I’m there and I’d genuinely rather have beans on toast.

Fish fact: fish is traditional on a Friday as fish tasted so bad in days of yore it was considered a penance

I read it like this too.

I think we might be the problem. It’s like Tally’s Blood all over again.

Don’t they say sleeping with the fishes in the godfather why’s nobody mentioned this yet.

Nearly always find it massively disappointing.

It’s fine to eat outside on a nice day, when you stick it down your neck straight after purchase. But as something to take home, it just ends up a soggy, stodgy mess. Usually just go for some sort of kebab and chips (plus a battered sausage as a side) for home consumption tbh.

This just raises further questions about hygiene in those shops.

would you buy food at a chippy owned and manned by @ericVI

Can’t remember where it was but there used to be a restaurant called Plaice to Meat near me. Isn’t that clever?
