Many people from the north of Sweden (non-indigenous people who were historically racialized as inferior) also seem to kinda ‘dislike’ (not the correct word) the southerners/see them as their ‘England.’ Not sure how different it is from England’s north/south dynamic.

If we go through a lot of places that won’t usually be showing sports will be putting up screens, you’ll be fine

(also yes this england team are likeable but they don’t have the monopoly on likeability, footballers from other countries can be likeable too! the german team was likeable and you sickos were all still happy when you beat them!)

it’s not a general election either, they’ll still be likeable if they lose.
Unless it breaks their spirits and turns them bad.

I spoke to a Swedish man this morning and he was very much wanting England to win on Weds. His reasoning was almost word-for-word; ‘Danish people always assume we can understand what they are saying, but we can’t. It’s so annoying. I think it’s ‘coming home’ for England and this makes me happy.’

For the record I root against England because I enjoy petty football rivalry and don’t like the way English culture and politics dominates the rest of the UK

I think if you’re in an England-based forum and are constantly talking about how badly you want the England football team to fail, talk up a 0-0 as the greatest result of your team in decades purely because it came against them, performatively buy the shirt of whoever they’re playing etc, eventually somebody is going to say ‘hey, fuck you’. It may come from a place you feel is perfectly justified - the media saturation, dickheads on twitter, the cooption of the game by a nationalistic, xenophobic government, centuries of shared history and colonial tyranny - but ultimately you have to know the people you are with are only human and what you’re doing is needling them.

It’s the old football thread story of where does banter end and abuse begin, heightened by national sentiment being woven into it. Unfortunately everyone has a different level of tolerance to it, and that makes it unfeasible to police. I think the general tone of these threads is good, and I think it’s healthy and funny for England supporters to be aware that pretty much the rest of the continent loathes us for fairly good reasons. Just try and be aware that this is not the running sewer of social media, it’s a forum of friends, and nobody’s going to benefit if it breaks down into acrimony because you had to offload your psychic grievance with the media and an overweight skinhead in the street here.

English people should make more of an effort to listen to Welsh, Irish and Scottish people when things like this come up instead of dismissing them and completely and utterly bizarrely assuming that their own experiences and relations with those from elsewhere in the UK are somehow comparable in terms of the dynamic, because they aren’t.

Getting to the point where it would be better if the euros never existed :tm: tbh

I’m gonna hang out in the Tour de France thread

Oh btw Griezmann is a massive racist pass it on

i agree with this but don’t think it’s ever been much of a consideration in these threads before, people are happy to repeatedly gloat in these threads when liverpool or man utd lose without considering whether their fans are human, and their fans are actually outnumbered rather than being the huge majority

That’s just not true - we’ve had blarneys over the exact issue of people ripping the piss out of those teams, feeling it’s alright to do because they’re so big, and then some of their supporters feeling like they’re getting picked on.

I’ll just repeat the advice I always give - if there’s a footie result that really gets you down, log off. Go for a walk, got to the gym. There’s nothing to be gained from scrolling through a load of gloating, wherever it is, getting sourer and sourer about it.

What @Severed799 has done is fuck all compared to the snide shit Scottish (and likely Welsh and Irish) people living in the UK have to accept on a daily basis. Get over it.

Think I feel the same about Brazil, I root for anyone playing them partly cos football rivalry can be fun and harmless but also partly because Brazil sometimes feels like the big lad lording it over everyone else in the playground

Dunno if it’s cause the actual teams I support are both utter shit so I’m usually on the other side of this.

But fans of a smaller team wishing misfortune on their bigger, more successful local rivals is absolute fine and fundamental to football. Just the natural order of things imo

There are also teams that it’s just funny to see fail. Even if the players are nice boys.

Chelsea have quite a likeable squad atm, for example, but anyone with a shred of decency wants them to lose every match in increasingly shambolic fashion.
