think it was simultaneously a good tournament and a big missed opportunity for England.

winning tournaments is really hard and getting incredibly close to doing it is an achievement in itself, really don’t agree that 2nd place is nothing. But at the same time, after France went out England had the best squad left, easy half of the draw and home advantage (arguably bigger than in a normal home tournament cos of how much some sides had to travel), also more luck with injuries than most sides. think it’ll be seen from outside as a bit like France in 2016 but not quite as bad. similar to France then they should be even stronger on paper at the next WC though

Hope they have a Tiny Tonka Truck to wheel out the heavy shot putt balls in the Olympics.

Never gonna get that fortuitous a draw again after two tournaments in a row innit.

Mad to think that in 2018, a month before the last World Cup, Saka was playing for England U17s. Went out on penalties to Holland but he scored his.

The lad’s emergence and progress has been absolutely incredible. I don’t think he quite gets the credit he deserves just yet but it’ll come. Watching him week in week out, constantly improving, being kicked to the ground multiple times every game but getting back on his feet and showing the determination to beat his opponent next time shows excellent character. His mentality and professionalism are two of his strongest assets.

I hope he has the right support around him because despite what I’ve just said, everyone needs it. He can hold his head high though and I’m certain that he’ll come back even stronger. He’s an exceptional talent that will be a key player for England maybe even by the next World Cup.

Oof

My memory of it was it just led to even more conservative, negative play in extra time.

@thewarn Can’t believe it’s been 20 years since it was used now. I guess I can be forgiven a bit of memory loss

Yeah, this is sort of what I keep thinking about today. Saka came on and clearly wasn’t his usual self. His hesitancy and nervousness were pretty clear to literally everyone watching. I thought he was clearly going to be the one subbed off again prior to penalties, but we sub off two of the most senior players in the whole squad? A club captain who models himself on Gerrard wasn’t fancied to take one?

How did Saka’s performance not inform the taker list at all?

I mean he is absolutely a prick, but has that loveable prick about him.

What a fanny. Would be hilarious if he ends up stuck at Aston Villa for the rest of his career.

Yeah, have spent a lot of time running through “who is the biggest knobhead in the squad these days” chats at work these last few weeks. I’ve ended up with Walker more often than not (who really isn’t even anywhere near the level of knobhead as we’ve had to put up with in the national team for the last 20 years) but I think Grealish is probably up there as well

yeah, absolutely. The silver goal was the real stinker tbf

And I think fair enough shouting up saying you would have taken one when people wrongly assume you essentially made a young kid take one
