I recall reading a big long article about fabric softener a few years back - it might have been this one
but as I don’t plan on giving the WSJ any of my details I can’t read it.
But basically the fact that everyone younger is worse off has led to people not buying anything they deem non-essential and fabric softner is first to go, was the gist as I understood.
I think buried in the article was the information that it does actually extend the life of clothes and that we would be better off buying it but then given the cost of clothes I’m really dubious it makes much difference. But yes, I don’t think it’s a ‘con’ it’s just not necessarily cost-effective.
I used to use it into my 30s due to my mum using it and then I just wasn’t sure why I was bothering and haven’t bothered since. I think it probably depends on how long you want your clothes to smell clean and washed when folded up in your drawers?
