I find I don’t need it, I use the smol pods that come in the post which work a treat. If I want some extra nice smell, I put some condioner in to boost it, but don’t feel like it makes anything softer.

Oh I need soft clothes!

God forbid there’s a war!

My first wash sans fabric softener seems like a roaring success so far!! Just took the clothes and two small towels out, and they smelt fresher?? Dunno if that’s a placebo thing though.
Also felt soft as normal.
Can’t believe I’ve been done like this, thank you to @Slicky and others for opening my eyes

Makes your laundry smell and feel weird.

So it’s a no from me, Clive.

The Lavender one is good on bedclothes too!

I’ll be honest, I quite like a rough towel.

Thinking back to the days I didn’t use fabric conditioner on account of being skint, I seem to remember my clothes not smelling or feeling as nice. That might just be psychological, or possibly due to the fact I was using the cheapest available washing powder for the same reason.

I don’t disagree, but I wonder whether it’s because I associate a rough towel with it being clean. If it’s soft it’s probably too filthy to be used

Give it a sniff, you’ll be ok then

Same with bedding for me. If I get in and it’s too soft I think “yuck, change these sheets you filthy minx.”

We finally have in unit laundry. My wife bought some of these ‘dryer balls’

I’m not sure what they do exactly, but the clothes seem to come out the dryer a bit softer.

I have some of these now the weather has cooled a bit

Can I talk to you about these smol pods please? Cause I’ve only ever seen them advertised on insta and I’m always quite wary of products I see on there. Are they actually better environmentally and do they do a decent job do you reckon?
I just use whatever pods/blobs are on offer so I’m very much open to change.

Also, for the sake of clarity I’m a single gal who lives alone- so I’m washing my bedding once a week, and my undergarments and whatever else as and when. Reckon I do three washes a week, so not a huge amount really.

It’s a pointless con and it makes waterproof things less waterproof .

Yes @blimeycharlie is right - don’t use it on towels as it makes them less effective. They need to be rough and dry to do their job.

I recall reading a big long article about fabric softener a few years back - it might have been this one

but as I don’t plan on giving the WSJ any of my details I can’t read it.

But basically the fact that everyone younger is worse off has led to people not buying anything they deem non-essential and fabric softner is first to go, was the gist as I understood.

I think buried in the article was the information that it does actually extend the life of clothes and that we would be better off buying it but then given the cost of clothes I’m really dubious it makes much difference. But yes, I don’t think it’s a ‘con’ it’s just not necessarily cost-effective.

I used to use it into my 30s due to my mum using it and then I just wasn’t sure why I was bothering and haven’t bothered since. I think it probably depends on how long you want your clothes to smell clean and washed when folded up in your drawers?

Don’t like it.

Smols are great. You set up an order for a pack to come every x days and they come through the post in a little cardboard box, that size that fits through most letterboxes. In terms of the environment and the pods I have no idea, but the packaging is all card so that goes in the recycling. They are as good as any other pod I have used, not overpowering in the aroma department, just does the job with no frills. The main thing for me is they just keep getting sent and they take up virtually no room.
