Will have to go with Surfer Rosa.
Heaven Or Las Vegas
oh god
favourite label ever, especially 80’s/early 90’s
either
Red House Painters- Down Colourful Hill
or
His Name Is Alive- Mouth by Mouth
HNIA are criminally underrated. Should be as revered as the Cocteau Twins.
Maybe not my favourite-favourite but this thread reminded me that I discovered the album Euphoria by Insides which was released in 1993 via our 4AD week and I really need to spend some more time with it // Drowned In Sound
Red House Painters, indeed. I find Autumn to be the perfect time of year to revisit their first 4 albums, and dusk to be the perfect time of day.
This seems to be pretty good! Will check it out properly tomorrow!
First thought is Treasure, but so many favourites. This is a great unofficial website, 1988 was incredible. http://4ad20.themysteryparade.com/4ad--the-first-twenty-years--1988.html
so many amazing releases - such a gutsy label I think
those early Birthday Party releases are particular special to me, as are Pixies releases
a personal favourite would be Underground Lovers - Leave Me Blind

Yep, Undergroung Lovers – Leaves Me Blind (though strictly speaking is 4AD sub-label Guernica)
Also: Doolittle for obvious pick, and Tarnation’s Gentle Creatures for super obscure pick.
True - it was a Guernica release - but i think they can be counted as a 4AD release technically
Plus 4AD has them on their history discog list
Hey, I’m not complaining; just flaunting my indie knowledge.
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain ![]()

Ah, came to post this. What an album!
Post Ivo years, but slso post the barren GusGus/Cuba years when 4AD got its shit back together and you could imagine Ivo would approve!
Throwing Muses - The Real Ramona (is that 4AD?)
If not, Doolittle.
Get him!!!
I was mad for 4AD around this time. Favourites probably Treasure, Come on Pilgrm, Throwing Muses

Couldn’t agree more. Wonderful band. It’s a bit of a sprawling mess but I’d probably go for Home is in Your Head.
Any excuse to post a link to this.
