Favourite 2023 albums you didn't hear until 2024

Reckon there’s usually been a thread along these lines on here by mid-January.

What have you all discovered from end of year lists or just generally being weeks/months behind?

I’m well behind on Danny Brown’s/JPEGMAFIA’s Scaring the Hoes but HEALTH’s RAT WARS was early December is more forgivable imo. Might just write off everything else I missed in 2023 so I don’t go into 2025 with a huge backlog.

Billy Woods. My bad for thinking I didn’t like much modern hip-hop, but then this is quite old school really.

Only caught up on 4 unheard from 2023 but so far it’s McKinley Dixon.

I think my favourite has been Bruce’s second album ‘Not Ready for Love’. He’s been mostly an experimental techno producer until now, but he did a Clark last year and decided to sing on all his tracks, and I really love it. These are songs in a loose sense in that they don’t really have verses and choruses, but the sound skews more ambient and soundscapey and the beats are glitchier and less predictable. It’s an album I really love to get lost in.

This is really nice - came out last summer, checked it out as he’s touring next month and playing here

Instrumental country stuff, RIYL William Tyler basically

Oh FFS I can’t believe I missed this coming out last year. I’ve not listened to it yet, but I’m going to enjoy this a fair bit.

Technically I listened to very late in 2023 (boxing day and again a couple of days later… and again today), but I have nothing I can include so far… it’s the boygenius record. Enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than I thought I would, hence repeat listens. Which is very rare for me with this kind of music.

I’m ploughing through a big old playlist. So far the highlights are: VHS Head (already released a new album this year), Blue Lake, Hotline TNT, girlfriend.

and a bunch of jazz - Yoni Mayraz, JSPHYNX, Phi-Psonics

Great album, that. His first EP is good too.

Thats the one. The label the album came out on has some great stuff on it too…
