Favourite albums of covers / reworkings?

Like Cat Power’s two collections. Or With a Little Help from My Fwends by Flaming Lips, recreating Sgt Pepper. Or I guess Taylor Swift re-recording her whole albums could count for this thread too?

I guess way back when, a lot of albums were mainly made of people doing their versions of popular songs?

Curious which you love, which you think more people should hear and whether there are any you’d love to hear (like I’d love an ambient version of White Pony by someone like M83 but maybe that’s a whole other thread)

This thread was sponsored by the Drowned in Sound label which just released this covers albums by The Anchoress - be great if you could all save it or have a listen to help bump the algorithm

Thomas Truax’s Songs From The Films Of David Lynch is a good one: the songs hang together well as an album, rather than just feeling like a selection of tracks the artist likes:

Has one of my favourite covers of Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game as an opener.

Recently picked up this album in a sale - Alasdair Roberts and friends covering various Bonnie Prince Billy songs (BPB covers a couple of their songs at the end)

An EP rather than a full album, but Erasure’s Abba-esque is a masterpiece.

Shannon Lay put out a nice one this year

A recent really good one is Clint Mansell’s really imaginative and inventive version of Lou Reed’s Berlin. Achieves the seemingly impossible in getting you to hear very familiar songs in completely new ways.

From the reworkings corner, the absolute GOAT for me is Soulwax - Nite Versions.

This album is so good (even 18 years later) that the original version of the album just doesn’t exist for me.

Also seeing them play this in its entirety on the bugged out tour (with Erol Alkan) remains to be over of the greatest nights of music of my life. I saw them at Sankeys at watched them play this from about a meter away.

Also, 18 years. Fucking hell.

Also this album of covers of Daniel Johnsotn songs. This record, along with the accompanying disc of originals, got me into Johnston.

I’m a big fan of Jeffrey Lewis’ 12 Crass Songs.

Been really into this lately - an album of lovers rock versions of (mostly) 80s pop numbers.

George Michael — Songs of the Last Century

This was one of my favourite albums of 2021

Enjoyed this album of Bob covers a lot:

I liked Peter Gabriel’s You Scratch My Back album where he covered some favourites:

And the companion piece And I’ll Scratch Yours where he then invited those artists to return the favour:

The whole concept of their Rise Above album was what got me hooked into Dirty Projectors

Link doesn’t seem to be previewing. It’s Jennifer Warnes’ album of Leonard Cohen covers: Famous Blue Raincoat.
