Like Cat Power’s two collections. Or With a Little Help from My Fwends by Flaming Lips, recreating Sgt Pepper. Or I guess Taylor Swift re-recording her whole albums could count for this thread too?
I guess way back when, a lot of albums were mainly made of people doing their versions of popular songs?
Curious which you love, which you think more people should hear and whether there are any you’d love to hear (like I’d love an ambient version of White Pony by someone like M83 but maybe that’s a whole other thread)
This thread was sponsored by the Drowned in Sound label which just released this covers albums by The Anchoress - be great if you could all save it or have a listen to help bump the algorithm
Thomas Truax’s Songs From The Films Of David Lynch is a good one: the songs hang together well as an album, rather than just feeling like a selection of tracks the artist likes:
Has one of my favourite covers of Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game as an opener.
Recently picked up this album in a sale - Alasdair Roberts and friends covering various Bonnie Prince Billy songs (BPB covers a couple of their songs at the end)
A recent really good one is Clint Mansell’s really imaginative and inventive version of Lou Reed’s Berlin. Achieves the seemingly impossible in getting you to hear very familiar songs in completely new ways.
From the reworkings corner, the absolute GOAT for me is Soulwax - Nite Versions.
This album is so good (even 18 years later) that the original version of the album just doesn’t exist for me.
Also seeing them play this in its entirety on the bugged out tour (with Erol Alkan) remains to be over of the greatest nights of music of my life. I saw them at Sankeys at watched them play this from about a meter away.
