I know two former young Tories.
One my brother in law. Grew up son of multi-millionaire hyper Tory, home counties big house, private school, all that kind of shit. Got out of that mindset when he went to university and did vote Labour in 2015, but is still a little bit of a neoliberal halfwit and went LibDem in 17 and 19. Partly because of Brexit, and partly out of thinking Corbyn was a dangerous radical and pining for The Sensibles to return to government. I’ll make a communist out of him yet.
The other my cousin, went turbo Tory of her own accord in her first year of university. Partly I think this may have been in some way due to having a really fucked up upbringing that meant she had to deal with a lot of stuff on the regular from aged 12 onwards that would break a lot of grown adults, so she seemed to really identify with Thatcher’s individuality politics that everybody should sort them fucking selves out. Also her mum, whilst nominally Labour because it’s massively unacceptable in our family to not be Labour, is thick and her personal politics are Tory af although she (at least claims to) always votes red. Tried to have words with her nicely to bring her round but always got met with scary far right meme speak. Surprisingly she went to work in America for a year after university and came back a massive comrade; doorknocked and phone banked for Labour at this election
