Watched Dark Waters which was pretty decent for a legal drama although after this and Spotlight Mark Ruffalo is in danger becoming pigeonholed as the guy who shouts “they knew” a lot.

watched When Marnie Was There last night and sobbed at the end

misread this as What Maisie Knew, I take back my like

Finally got round to watching The Beatles Never Existed the film (Yesterday). It was alright in a way I kind of liked the fact that they kept whatever plot device that caused The Beatles to disappear a secret

Realized part way though the music narrative was more or less just a framing device for a fairly ubiquitous romance film but I guess there’s a reason why these kinds of stories persist. 7/10

quite enjoying trying to remember similar stuff from the two films… sticking body parts out of moving cars, mentioning ‘black excellence’- his dad telling him he has to better than other people (assume he means because he’s black) and slim say black people feel the need to be excellent not mediocre, music chat. preferred q + s for that even if it didn’t really make sense in terms of time- they’re riffing on Vandross eras, love jones D’Angelo, they’re as young as that and they have mobiles? didn’t mind though because they didn’t seem to aim for realism. think it’s maybe unfair to compare them on the same basis, because they’re so different tonally- queen and slim very cartoonish and waves going for realism. both being soundtrack heavy, the q + s one was more fitting I think. loved the music

Yessssss

Is the plan to keep releasing films from the saw universe now? Not sure if want…

This one came about cos Chris Rock apparently really wanted to do one and approached Lionsgate with the basic story.

Thought the last one was pretty decent tbh.

I think Danny McBride’s involvment in the Halloween reboot that did really well has studios thinking they should just find a comedian to reboot a horror franchise now

Had a quick scan of the wiki article and I’ve just remembered that I actually watched Jigsaw based on that genuinely not sure if the franchise has much more juice in it.

Might give it a go, I feel like it kinds of hints at something different but there is a certain ‘feel’ to saw movies which I think might be getting a little tired.

Watched La Strada for the first time last night. Giulietta Masina has an interesting face.

Chris Rock’s done some interesting films (Top 5, Dolemite Is My Name, 2 Days in New York) amongst the Grown Ups/Death at a Funeral nonsense so this may be good

Don’t forget Pookie in New Jack City!

I’m more of a Total Film/Sight & Sound man but bought Empire today just for its 100 Best Films of the 21st Century So Far - the winner was Mad Max: Fury Road

But really though?

Really?

Watching I Saw The Devil.

Does it get less torture porn-y? Had to pause it a few times now

  • No stop
  • Watch it, it is good art
