Always a bit dubious of a film where it’s a star writing and/or directing, but was very impressed by Mid-90s

Like it when there’s a mini-spate of themed films from the same sort of time.
Have you seen Minding the Gap and Skate Kitchen too?
Well worth seeking them out if you haven’t

just seen that Perfumed Nightmare’s on mubi

great film everyone pls watch and discuss

The information under ‘Plot’ has really sold it to me

Watching ‘Inglorious Basterds’ for the first time, the sound is completely fucked, dialogue is fat too quiet one second, then the music swells and it’s blasting in my face.

Probably need to get something better than the standard TV audio mind, but this is wild!

Ticked off a previously unseen John Carpenter flick. Was dead good!

Dead Pigs - thought this was very good, no way I’m watching Birds of Prey still though

Last couple of days:

She Demons - 50s b movie about passengers on a shipwreck landing on an island to find out it is also occupied by Nazis conducting experiments. Cheaply made, awful script and dialogue, ludicrous set pieces, absolutely loved it. Perfect Saturday night with a beer viewing

The Painted Bird - happy Valentine’s Day! This is an expected tough watch but I thought it did have merit. It’s not as graphic as it['s been made out to be, and I surprisingly didn’t find Julian Sands, Barry Pepper or Harvey Keitel popping up to be distracting. It is a slog though but if you ‘liked’ Come and See I think this is worth a watch

The Rental - one of the most derivative and uninspired films I’ve seen in quite some time. Utter snoozefest

The Cement Garden - parents die causing 4 siblings to look after each other. It all goes badly wrong, not helped by the older brother and sister’s relationship being rather incestuous. Not too sure what to make of it overall, but it’s worth a watch I think

watched rocks earlier - was surprised by how good it was, the main actress and her young brother, who must only be about 6, are both excellent

Blimey in a good way?

Very much, though sold it to the TV as it being a comedy and er, soon regretted that.

Yeah not exactly laughs a minute! I did really like how much the film veered from the basic synopsis Mubi gave it though, caught me off guard too

I don’t think In Fabric is a badly made film, but I can’t think of anything I’ve watched recently that has rubbed me so badly the wrong way as it did.

I don’t think I have any patience for films which lean so heavily in to pastiche. Couldn’t stand the pace, the performances, the quirkiness, the tonal shifts. It was laser pointed to irritate me.

Recently watched:

The Art Of Self Defence - Quirky comedy drama with Jesse Eisenberg who’s a socially shy and meek office worker who’s beaten up badly by muggers. He takes up karate. Hadn’t heard of this until a few days ago and is one of those films where it’s a slightly alternate world like maybe The Lobster. Not a fighting or action film and also has Imogen Poots in support. Vivarium starring the two didn’t quite click for me but this one did. 8/10.

Ordinary Love - Lesley Manville is diagnosed with breast cancer. The film follows her as she undergoes the diagnoses and treatments. A sweet, tender, moving story and occasionally funny too but mostly moving. Liam Neeson is the husband and the chemistry between the two is lovely. Beautifully moving. 8.5/10.

About Time - It had some great reviews and I’ve liked Rachel McAdams films but don’t particularly like Richard Curtis films and never liked his version/view of London. Thought it was dull from the beginning. Managed to “watch” it all or at least it was on in the background. I’ve had huge problems with my music app and it gave me the opportunity to delete and reinstall the app and download about 100 albums. So time not completely wasted. 3/10.

Five Easy Pieces - Jack Nicholson comes from a rich family and could easily have had a career as a pianist but instead chooses to work as an oil rig worker. His dad’s dying and so visits his family for the first time in a long time. A great scene of him, his wife Karen Black and two other women one of which is Toni Basil (Hey Mickey) at a restaurant. An excellent 70s film I hadn’t seen before with some brilliant dialogue between minor cast as well as the major. 8/10.

One Cut Of The Dead - Japanese horror zombie comedy. Before watching I didn’t know anything about it except a film crew are shooting a zombie film at an abandoned warehouse and then real life zombies attack the cast and crew.
To those interested in watching: don’t look up anything more about it.
Watch it with knowing as little as possible about it. It’s fun, brilliant, innovative and near perfect. 9/10.
