On The BBC website review thing it said Kermode watched it three times. I’ll watch it once very soon.

I picked Space Sweepers on Netflix as my apocalyptic film a few days ago. Probably picked the wrong one.

i think my problem with the film overall is when i see ‘gerard butler’ and ‘apocalypse’ i expect something OTT/ridiculous whereas this was actually quite dour and depressing. it was alright but basically just a mash up of The Mist and Deep Impact.

did love Scott Glenn turning up thought.

so so much this. actually said out loud when he appeared ‘yaaasss scott glenn’ the tv looked at me like i was nuts ‘who’s scott glenn?!’

Who’s scott glenn, pffffffft.

Ratcatcher - there’s something really special to this. The story is quite thin really but it encapsulates just the misery of the time perfectly. Thought it was great

Head Count - another good un. A guy hooks up with a girl and her friends and whilst telling scary stories, he unwittingly summons a spirit who takes the form of members of the group. It’s reminiscent of It Follows but it does a great job of pacing the stort well and drops little hints of things not going well before the big ending. Worth a watch

The Platform :white_square_button: Thought this was striking and gripping allegorical tale. Doesn’t have the deft touch of other recent films prodding at similar subjects, but is equally rewarding with solid execution. Also made me think of Cube which is never a bad thing. (Netflix) 4/5

End Of Watch :rotating_light: Really didn’t like that it drifted in and out of the usp…either commit to the bit or don’t do it at all! JG is the most consistent lad out there for me and is solid here as expected. Overall a fairly standard melodrama in which my allegiance was never sold and think it would be a different story if made today. The soundtrack feels like is was from a totally different film, no idea what was going on there. (BBC1) 3/5

Little Big Women :coffin: Perhaps resonated with me slightly more than most as i’ve been to a funeral in Taiwan so have points of reference, but subtracting that I feel it could be universally viewed as touching family drama. Moments of levity from up and down the cast keep the mood from drifting too far into the gloom with the script ringing true with the Grandma’s razor sharp tongue being a highlight. It has a calming warm glow, elegant tracking shots and few beautiful touches. (Netflix) 4/5

It’s Such A Beautiful Day :eyes: Interminable guff. Said I would give it a go after seriously struggling through World Of Tomorrow 1 + 2… and give it a go I did. Utterly stone faced once again and barely made it through the hour. Nearly 30k 4 star+ reviews on Letterboxd with universal acclaim elsewhere and I felt totally nothing. No fun, no laughs, no charm, no beauty, no wonder, no inventiveness… just heaps upon heaps joyless ‘lol so random’ early internet gibberish. 1/5

Precious :cat2: Just about hung in there. Well acted, but incredibly messy in pretty much every other department with the intended tonal shifts feeling so awkward. (Sony Movies Channel) 2/5

Malcolm & Marie :smoking: Engrossing and gorgeous two hander where I can fully understand the detractions. Really enjoyed the ebb and flow nature of their confidence/ego/history/insecurities going from simmering to bubbling over and back again. Zendaya and JDW gave it their all and the house is used in interesting ways to keep things ticking over. (Netflix) 4/5

The Greatest Showman :tophat: Pure candy floss and not for me. Great if you’ve got a sweet tooth though. (Channel 4) 2.5/5

The French Connection :baguette_bread: Wonderful cat and mouse filmmaking so thick with 70’s grime and grit I felt I needed to clean my tv afterwards. Gene looks nearly unrecognisable to me! Feels like one of those people who has been frozen looking a certain way for decades. (Sony Movies Classic) 3.5/5

Head Count is brilliant. I watched it without really knowing what it was about. An excellent hidden gem.

Have you seen a film called Don’t Blink? It’s on Amazon.

The reviews and imdb scores weren’t great. The cast didn’t fill me with promise either but I enjoyed that far more than I thought I would.

Head Count and Don’t Blink are sort of similar films.

Is that the one with Mena Suvari? If so then yeah, not for ages though. Enjoyed that too!

Yeah, that’s the one. And a bloke from 90210. Liked the film a lot.

Cathy Yan’s (director of Birds of Prey) debut film is on Mubi this Friday:

“from director Eli Roth.”

Am out

Rewatched Prometheus the other day and now we’re on Alien Covenant. Will it be as bad as I remember? Probably. Gets at least a point for killing James Franco immediately though

But the Hey Ma scene though

Just finished A Glitch in the Matrix, a documentary on the theory that we are all living inside a simulation. It made some pretty interesting points but didn’t really win me over to the interviewee’s world view. Also not really sure what to think of the 15 minutes or so given to a vivid retelling of how a guy murdered his parents because he thought he lived in the Matrix, when it was clear he had lots of other things going wrong in his life and The Matrix just happened to be the popular thing at the time that resonated with how he was feeling.

Will never tire of the sheer weirdness of adapting ‘Dungeons & Dragons’. What next, a big movie adaptation of the Unreal Gaming Engine?

Watched Lizzie last night. Was a good, understated semi-horror. Almost a period drama mumblecore film actually. That’s probably a thing. I have an annoying dislike of that sort of 1800’s period movie which got in the way of my enjoyment, but was def a decent film.
