While I’m not the remake’s biggest fan, it’s not a weak cash in. It’s an incredibly polished game with some really beautiful moments. They’ve done phenomenal work remixing the soundtrack and fleshing out characters like Biggs, Jessie, and Wedge, and there’s a lot of respect for the source material in it.

Sadly, that respect ends with certain story beats which I think are awful.

X was my introduction to FF as a player, not a spectator. I adored that game and along with MGS2 basically secured my lasting interest in video games as something more than just a fun distraction.

To me that is weakness, because polish doesn’t impress me. I’m glad they’ve fleshed out Wedge but for £70 or whatever if it’s not up to snuff intellectually that’s worse.
It’s a cash in because they’ve skimped on the ambition (which let’s be honest in the modern era is more than doable now) and made sure it’s in instalments. It’s just a bit smelly to me.

No game is £70. It’s the same price as any other new release, £40-50.

Yes, focusing just on Midgar sucks, but I can see why they’ve done it. It gives that part of the game more time to breath, but as many reviews note, there is filler, and they could’ve ditched some of the menial side quests and expanded more of the game.

In terms of ambition, I think the PS4 era has seen Japan retake some of its PS2 era glory. There’s been some wonderful experiences like Nier Automata, Persona 5, Gravity Rush, and the Resident Evil revivals. And I don’t believe this game was made by the same Square that put out stinkers like FF13 and The Last Remnant last gen.

Yeah but only on a playthrough a few years back, to get the trophy.

What a waste of time

This is the game that, for me, feels now like FF7 did when I first played it

they used all their budget on episode 1, here’s a leaked screenshot from episode 2

Downloaded and waiting, though realistically I’m not going to be able to start playing it for a week or so.

I completed FFVII around 10 times over my lifetime, and know full-well I’m going to be trying to eke out every tiny bit of gameplay from this. Just hearing that soundtrack with an actual orchestra is probably going to make me start weeping for my lost youth.

yeah loads of great atmospheric music, really gave the places a sense of character, hard to see how they can really achieve that in the age of realistic visuals and realistic scale of places, like a town theme seems to out of place

Welled up the instant it came on. Going to buy it on Xbox One and replay it now I’m WFH.

Tempted by this.

What’s the deal with the parts, have they said how many there’ll be? Is this the old ‘disc one’?

The battle format in the demo baffled me.

this is only midgar. at best they might release up to the chocobo farm in 2024 and then abandon the entire thing.

Can you DM me when they get to Super Dunk

Doubt it. I only got Omni Slash because the game takes pity on you and gives you it if you don’t have it by the time you reach Sephiroth.
