Fights/weird incidents at gigs

Inspired by the chat in the Low thread - have you seen any fights or weird aggro incidents at gigs? outside of the usual slight shoving, irritating moshing etc.

keeping it on the vaguely lighter side, so nothing too violent or shocking plz

I’m sorry but being a touring Low fan who continuously gets into fights for chatting too loudly is the funniest hobby of all time.

Seen a fight break out while Hot Chip were finishing their set playing Dancing In The Dark at the Barrowlands, that was good.

Seen a guy piss off one too many people at a Neil Young gig and take a hook to the jaw.

I was at the Huggy Bear ‘riot’ in 1993 but I’ve told that story before.

I have a friend who’s tall, about 6’4, and he gets a lot of aggro at gigs from people who can’t see. A few pints in and people of all shapes and sizes just seem to think it’s alright to lamp him in the back of the head. Wonder if that’s a normal experience for the longbois among us?

weirdest for me would be Tegan and Sara supported by Astronautalis in 2009

during the support slot random guy wandered up next to me, started loudly heckling, and turning to me saying “shit isn’t he, eh, isn’t he shit”. Since I was enjoying it quite a bit I said no man disagree, please go away, and he wandered off to do the same to someone else

then come the headliners, spotted/heard him doing the same thing! who pays good money and wastes their own time to heckle the headliners. Think he did it a few too many times though and took a punch - remember T+S stopping the gig for a few minutes to have him removed and I think there was a bit of a cheer after

If a fight at a Low gig seems unlikely, I once saw a dust-up between two blokes at Indietracks.

Smashmouth member throwing a bottle into the audience in sheffield causing a massive ruckus

Went to see orphan boy in manchester and they had a group of grimsby town lads with them and it went right off, was nasty as because it was in joshua brooks and underground with one exit.

A few spring to mind.

One was at the Lexington where I was seeing a noise band play (I can’t remember who it was now). The front man decided that he was going to get into the crowd and push people around. He ended up going after a guy and spear tackling him to the floor, breaking the audience member’s shoulder, however the venue thought it was just a dislocation and someone tried to pop it back in which made it even worse. There was a thread about it on the old boards - it sounded really awful. The band apologised and kicked the frontman out IIRC.

Next one: I went with a friend on his birthday to see Fucked Up at Corsica studios, so he was a bit drunk by the time Fucked Up came out. Just as they were coming on stage a guy wearing a massive fedora stood right in front of us. My friend asked if he’d mind taking his hat off, and was told to ‘fuck off’ by the guy. So, just as Fucked Up launched into their first song, my friend grabbed the guy’s hat and frisbee’d it into the middle of the mosh pit. The other guy just flipped - punching my mate over and over again while my mate who was in hysterics. The bouncers dragged the other guy out and kicked him out.

someone started on me at Billy Bragg last year when I asked them to be quiet, Billy even mentioned it on stage, not ideal

I was at that Low gig at a church in Brighton. Can’t remember what the guy was doing exactly. I know he insisted on standing right in front of everybody at a seated gig but can’t remember if he was singing loudly throughout too. He pissed absolutely everyone off that night but remember the band were reluctant to get him chucked out for some reason.

Remember seeing Morrissey at Manchester Arena in 2004.
Was in the seating at the side and an almighty fight with about six blokes broke out. Absolute carnage. They fell down to the bottom of the seating area and continued slugging it out in the wheelchair area. Went on for ages until the stewards finally got control and threw them all out.

Saw someone throw a strop at awakebutstillinbed earlier this year because someone accidentally moshed into him. Extra weird was that he was wearing a hardcore band hoody and probably should have been used to people moshing into him? idk.

If we’re talking weird incidents sparked off by an Alan Sparhawk gig, surely mention should be made of End Of The Road 2009 and the guitar shot-put.

Fucked Up are an odd duck for that, usually the crowd are absolute diamonds but there’s sometimes someone who seems to get carried away, especially if they’re not regulars

I remember an 80s matchbox gig where Guy jumped off stage to fight someone down the front. And the Jay Electronica Primavera set where he invited fans on stage, the festival stopped the set and he had a strop and walked off. Think the set lasted about 20 mins total. Was down the front for David Cross getting heckled off stage by the weird cape-and-pants man at ATP.
