To be fair, I’m not sure anyone would say any of the star wars films are masterpieces. Unless I’ve misjudged the room or what people define as a masterpiece.

reckon loads of people think TESB is a masterpiece (and some ANH) and as at the time a lot of people were saying TLJ was the best star wars film, I would expect it to have had a couple of mentions

Well colour me surprised.

The star wars franchise through the years:

  • Contains masterpieces
  • Nah, entertaining but not what I’d call masterpieces
  • Not on star wars book

this will probably be seen as a referendum on my star wars views so will be biased

Don’t be silly. Respect the poll.

I don’t think I would call any Star Wars films a “masterpiece” but that speaks more to a personal definition than it does to the quality of the films.

Hello Ruffers!

Roy Andersson’s Living trilogy (Songs From the Second Floor, You the Living and A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence). Some other stuff too, idk it’s early.

Most Hirokazu Koreeda films of the past 20 years, really.

The White Ribbon
The Lobster
Spirited Away
Ladybird
Arrival

To be fair there is probably a little element of my own feeling about the definition of masterpiece that relates to arty films but only a smidge and for me it is more that everything, or near enough, needs to be as good as it can be and that it perfectly conveys what it was intended to.

So for me star wars is terrific knockaround fun but let’s face it Hamill can’t act and some of the scripts… Eesh. But tremendous fun nonetheless.

Anyway this probably shouldn’t become another star wars thread so sorry for steering it in this direction.

Oh, and some Bong Joon-ho films:

Memories of Murder
Mother

(Parasite is ace, but think the above are better).

Also Hunt for the Wilder People.

And Eureka just about scrapes in (from 2000).

I dont think I would call any film a masterpiece by virtue of being a film.

but who knows films better than film fan readers of film magazine empire, who voted TESB second best film of all time

Burning
Zodiac
Moonlight
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Uncut Gems
There Will Be Blood
Spirited Away
Mulholland Drive
