Elena

Very stylish Russian film about a housewife who eventually murders her second husband so that she can provide for her feckless first family. Enjoyed it a lot.

The Gallows.
Utterly awful horror film about kids trapped in a theatre. Makes no sense at all, it can’t work out whether it’s found footage or shaky cam and is terribly acted.

Hot Pursuit. Just 90 minutes of screeching.

Weird weekend for films…

Mike and Dave need wedding dates - Very average but it had it’s funny moments. Aubrey Plaza was fantastic as always. Would have liked more Stephen Root and Sam Richardson. 5/10

Swiss Army Man - Honestly Bizarre. Castaway shot like a music video but with dialogue that played like Terrence and Phillips ‘Asses of Fire’. The last half an hour was pretty good though ( I think). I was expecting it to be odd but urm yeah. FARTS/10

The Man Who Would Be King - It was on BBC4 last night whilst I was flicking through. I missed the beginning but it was great. Caine and Connery play some pretty despicable chaps and their accents aren’t toned down in the slightest. The ending was fantastic! 8/10

The Blue Room - probably my favourite film of the year so far (even though it’s 2 years old). Story about a man being questioned over a crime which isnt made known until the final section, intersected with the past story It’s on mubi now

Muriel, or the Time of Return - the first and last half hours are brilliant, the middle bit is frustratingly dull

That looks dead good, will try and track it down

Train to Busan - Korean zombie thriller on a train. Enjoyable stuff.

I can give you a Mubi free trial if you want, think it lasts for a month? Blue room’s only about 76 minutes long too but packs a lot in

Think I’ve got a code somewhere I’ve been waiting to pull the trigger on, might do it now though, cheers pal

Might try Blue Room, I feel like Mubi has been a bit light on pickings recently That Nicolas Winding Refn retrospective was really good though.

yeah there’s too many dedications or themed weeks now. it’s good that they stick up say Powell & Pressburger’s back catalogue, but if you’re not a fan, it means there#s 6/7 days you’r enot bothered about. They just did a William Klein one, and one of the films is 12 minutes long which is a con

That Hugh Jackman thing with all the torture. I loathed that but i have a couple of pals that liked it.

saw captain fantastic, enjoyed it
wish this thread was just about new releases

The infiltrator, enjoyed this despite it’s rather formulaic narrative.
Good cast especially John leguizamo. Who the fuck would be an undercover cop and who the fuck would go undercover against the Medellin cartel?! Big fucking balls.

Captain Fantastic - brilliant
The girl with all the gifts - Really bad, baffled by good reviews
Little Men - Superb

Had somehow missed Drive until seeing it on Mubi. Top stuff - and I didn’t realise quite how much Hotline Miami was inspired by it…

who is leaving messages on your answering machine?

loved ‘things to come’. sometimes I have a problem with didactic dialogue, like parts of her last one, ‘eden’ or the priest scene in ‘hunger’. this felt ok though, with the protagonist being an academic. it’s a similar story to julieta, but so much better.

Cafe Society

New Woody Allen movie about Hollywood and relationships. Lightweight and a bit irritating prob because I always find Messy Eisenberg irritating.

5/10

watched the netflix Amanda Knox documentary. i guess it’s a deserved bit of image rehabilitation for her but it doesn’t really add anything to the story and isn’t a particularly incisive or well-made film. ends up being another retelling of the same story which seems only to exist because true crime is ‘in’ right now.

Mechanic: Resurrection. I love The Stath, but this was just appalling. Looking at the credits, it was a Thai/Bulgarian production and it really showed. Probably the worst film Jason has ever been in. Mechanic: Really Rubbish more like.

Yeah it’s really great, I wrote the programme notes for my work on it. http://www.glasgowfilm.org/theatre/gft_blog/8198_programme_note_things_to_come

Mad Max: Fury Road

I really enjoyed this, especially the guy with the guitar on fire.
