I’m several hours in but still can’t get over the fact that despite the high fantasy setting (knights, Castles…etc) the cast list reads like a bunch of accountants.
Clive
Jill
Cid
Rodney and Hannah Murdoch
Gav
The names are just brilliantly ordinary in this game.
You havent met mid yet
Rodney you plonker
Also yeah i will never firget how sucked into the opening sequence only for 2 kids to suddenly start calling ‘clive’ and i spat out my drink
How far in are you currently

Despite being a bit of a visual mess at times somehow the latest big boss battle was even bigger and more ridiculous than the last time i said that and the story capped it off with several pivotal scenes and im npw stareing at the map screen kinda too exhausted to find out what happened next so im taking a break lol
GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAV!
Some random thoughts:
Obviously it all looks fantastic as you’d expect, but didn’t expect this level of OTT spectacle. It’s bananas and I’m fully on board with it.
The combat is a lot of fun if a bit button mashy at points. I haven’t been able to get the timing down for parrying properly yet, so it’s probably me more than anything.
Voice acting is surprisingly decent for the most part.
Big fan of Cid in this one so far. No nonsense, wants to create a more equal world, dry sense of humour. Seems like a top lad.
I guessed the first couple of major plot twists fairly early on, but interested to see where it goes and just how much more bonkers it gets.
Parrying isnt a good mechanic in this game dodging is way more viable (i inly ever parry by accident) imho deffo spec into improving your dodge i got the ability to warp and retaliate as well as slow down time so i have abig window to decide if its safe to go back in or not and a ring that makes me beserk after i do a precision dodge so when i dodge it goes slow mo i judge what the big bad is going to do next in the slow mo and if i want to go in hit square and i then do extra damage and have faster attack speed - if i stack that with the overlimit meter i can get people staggered rwally quite fast.
It is a bit button mashy but it becones less so once you unlock your 3 ability types as youll be rotating between 9 abilities not 3
I’ve mainly been dodging but I figured I’d also try to get my parrying skills up to a better standard too. Keep forgetting that I’ve been earning ability points to put into new techniques.
Tis fair. To put your mind at ease my playstation tells me im 80% through the main story and my complete inability to parry has never been an issue so if you can never quite nail it it shouldnt be a problem
Also if your not spending ability points it probably feels a tad more button mashy then it should.
Playing in quality mode and it’s probably the best looking AAA game I’ve played in terms of raw visual quality. Not artistically though - it’s no Glover on N64.
Yesh im usually a frame rate slave for games like this although there is one stage where i almost knocked ot back down the one i just finished where the franes got really quite chuggy - deffo dropped below 30 a few times and was unstable
Probably because it was the first stage set in a city so there was a lot going on visually
I’m fine with 30 and i like the motion blur in this
Yeah its been fine it was this one area where it wasnt consistent thats when you really notice.
The combat is forgiving enough that 60fps doesnt feel as neccesary as it does for devil may cry or bayonetta
Okay about to wrap up final fantasy 16 so happy to sell on. Trade in value is astronomical (£43) so i think im going to think of me and not sell for £20 (sorry for promising that earlier i need to be more frugal abd sebsible with money!) but will shift for £40 postage included if anyone wants to lay dibs to it before i sell it to CEX saturday
Gavlar
I am feeling a little burn out on the main map. The area design is pretty uninspiring and there is little incentive to explore off the main route though each area as invariably you are just picking up another crafting item of 5 gil at the end of it. I am finding myself now just sprinting through quests in order to get to the next big set piece which is inevitably great once I get there.
I will never tire of this battle theme
I ended up bot playing it friday/sat vut accudently did an 8hr long uninterrupted session - mostly wrapping up side quest plot arcs it seems i assume im appaeebtoy 80% into the main story as the storys feel like theyre wrapping up side quests deffo improve significantly as the gane goes on - but due to the games knack of giving you 2 - 3hrs worth of side quests at once i cant help but feel they really couldve done a bettet job spreading the side quests out to make the first half less dire in that regard because i was almost turned off of aide questing conpletely in those first 20 - 25hrs, thankfully i did persevere with them though as there were some nice character moments and some pretty engaging stories thrown in and got a few useful upgrades to boot from the green plus side quests.
Not long left now. I reckon 5hrs?
Mid is a fun character - her colourful language and ethusiasm makes her super endearing - the whole core cast is pretty great tbh Jill, Cid, Gav, Mid, Clive and many others all a GBOL
