I have only ever had scraps in the weirdest places Otley, Holmfirth and Ulverston are the ones that spring to mind seems to be something quite rare these days. Any Fish ‘n’ Chips that don’t come in paper should immediately binned and any Chippy that have a counter that is under 5”11 should be closed for refurbishment.

Where you getting your scraps in Holmfirth? Compo’s used to be OK, but went downhill.

It was probably 15 years ago may even have been longer. There used to be one in the centre don’t even know if it is still there near the river I think.

Ah, Hollowgate. Switched to that one when Compo’s (which is a bit outside the centre) went downhill. Must have been spectacular scraps to still be memorable now!

Maybe it’s just a simple cultural differnece but there are a couple of things bothering me about this thread (specifically, tartare sauce and mushy peas) but I don’t want to be rude so lets see if we can come to a consensus.

We are talking about fish and chips from a chip shop. Somewhere that you buy food and take it outside or home to eat.

Tartare sauce

  • I think tartare sauce is a normal thing to get from the chippy
  • I have no problem with tartare sauce but it’s not normal to get it from the chippy
  • Yuck

Mushy peas

  • I am from down South (e.g. Yorkshire, Lancashire)
  • I would never choose to eat this mulch and I’m glad my local chippy feels the same.

Sundries

  • Pickled onion
  • Pickled egg
  • Two pickled onions
  • One of each

Obviously there are regional variations. I wouldn’t always get peas from a chip shop but I would expect them in a restaurant or at home. Would expect tartare sauce everywhere. No pickles or eggs for me.

Not really it’s just so rare to get scraps and there was a point were the family was spending every weekend up there for various reasons that I just remember em.

I don’t like tartare sauce but thought it was a pretty standard thing to get from a chippy?
I don’t like mushy peas much either.
I really want fish and chips from the chippy.

Wow. I don’t think I’ve ever been aware of a chippy offering tartare.

I’ve always thought of tartare as being a seaside condiment rather than an inland condiment.

Have never got tartare sauce when eating out, like on a bench or buying it to take home. Always imagined that if I ate in there would be some in a sachet somewhere.

This could make sense. I love fish but I’m scared of the sea.

Also get a couple of those Heinz sachets - but I’m a tartare fiend

Personally I’d class a battered sausage in the ‘Sundries’ category, as previously mentioned.

Only tried a pickled egg once and wasn’t keen. Was years ago though and it’s one of those things that in theory has my name written all over it (see also, pate) - Think I need to revisit this next time I get F+C

Neither pls.

Maybe a side rather than a sundry? Single sausage used to be a staple lunch at a secondary school. Or a double pickled onion supper.

Made my own fish and chips tonight m8s.

Giving it a 7/10 since I cheated and used oven chips and it was a bit rushed so I could have tweezed out some of the bones, but the batter was class.

(Heck yes that’s curry sauce)

The batter makes or breaks a fish and chips and that looks like 10/10 batter. Some people are going to be horrified by your chip ratios, I reckon you’ve got enough fish there you don’t need them. 8/10

They can get in the bin! (Actually had more chips than I could fit on the plate)

My local chippy does a"fish platter ". It’s a whole bunch of calamari, scampi, whitebait, cod chunks etc etc etc all battered and it’s bloody lovely.
