Would have like a multiple choice option but no worries. I’m always throwing down mushy peas, ketchup AND tartar.

No worries :slightly_smiling_face:

Then I stand by ketchup. Have a magnificent weekend!

I’d say 4/10 was generous looking at the state of it.

this is quite bleak

This is from a year or so ago but reading this thread reminded me of this beast of a fish portion I got from the nearby chippy. It’s salt ‘n’ sauce on the chips underneath in case anyone thinks I’d ruin them with gravy.

What was the fish? Batter looks good. Chips (from what I can see) looks good.

Haddock I think? Thick fillet with a thin crispy batter – as good as it gets. They always warn you there will be a longer wait on fish than the other stuff as they will only cook it to order so it doesn’t become dried out. Sign of a good chippy I reckon.

Chips good too. I once went in just as they were closing and the guy gave me all the cooked chips they had left - basically a triple portion of chips, also with a fish on top. Delighted to say I finished the lot.

2 points as the chips were decent, 1 point for the pickled onion and condiments, 1 point for the fish cake

This is the first thing in this thread which actually looks like a fish supper. Points off for no pickle, but excellent judgement to have the sauce on the chips and not the fish.

Can’t say I’ve ever had a pickle or even had the option (do you mean a cucumber or onion one?) with a fish supper but I feel if you are having vinegar infused brown sauce then there is enough fruity tanginess in the mix without the need for something pickled.

I’ve been to chippys that insist that your salt/vinegar/ketchup/‘insert sauce of choice’ options have to apply to the whole dish rather than recognising that while chips generally benefit from a bit of moisture, the fish is best left crispy. Utter madness as far as I’m concerned.

Onion. Eggs are less common, but what kind of chippy doesn’t sell pickled onions?

looks bangin’

is this plaice?

The owners of this place are Polish so maybe not into pickled onions or eggs. They do a sideline menu only written in Polish so I don’t know what’s on it but it always smells good. My local place in Norn Iron doesn’t sell pickled stuff either – maybe it’s a regional thing?

I do remember one of my first jobs in my late teens working in an old man’s bar, when a guy asked me for an egg I didn’t know what the fuck he meant, thought he wanted me to go fry him one. Had to ask another staff member and they explained it was a cooked egg soaked in vinegar. Thought it sounded a bit rank at the time and I’ve never tried one since.

I know it looks that shape but think it was haddock. If not, cod. Can’t really tell from the photo but it was a good bit thicker than a plaice would be.

 bet that entire other polish menu is just pickled stuff if it’s like the polish I know

That place is a rip. What are you doing in Winchester?

Big bit of fish, need more info on the batter. Like the look of the peas, plenty of tartar, nice addition of lemon. Some will say not enough chips but I think there’s just enough for me. Depending on the fish/batter a 7/10 for me.
