Fair enough, I mean opinions opinions opinions

Not sure it’s a pointless criticism tho, the vocal affectation strikes me as very odd too. It’s all a bit musical theatre - sure it’s completely okay to like it (as to dislike it), but I’m not sure it’s an irrelevant criticism. I mean I don’t think most people are sat around listening to Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals, but that’s how hollow it sounds to me

I don’t think that thread ‘oils the wheels of discourse’ either. Posting stuff from relentlessly neggy out of work freelancers is no different to posting whatever Piers Morgan is moaning about this morning. It’s done purely to increase their personal branding, all fluff and hyperbole to get likes and retweets and almost certainly isn’t coming from a place of thoughtfulness or consideration about a record that the artist has been vocal about putting a lot of heart and time into. The stuff about her vocal just comes across as nasty.

Aye the tweet reads like someone who hasn’t liked something, forcing themselves to listen to it and surprise - they still don’t like it. Fair enough to not like things obviously, but when that criticism is delivered in this way it seems a bit weightless.

But I dunno, analysing flippant tweets never did anything good for anyone.

“out of work freelancers” is probably at least as “neggy” as anything else mentioned in that thread LOL

I’m not sure that these “out of work freelancers” are particularly on a brand awareness tip either really

Errr, how do you know if you do or don’t like something until you listen to it?

At risk of nitpicking here, but I’m being given a lot to nitpick tbf

I said the tweet reads “like someone who”. I wasn’t being definitive because I know I could be wrong, but the manner of the tweet came across like they weren’t fans of the artist before and that’s what I interpreted from it when I first read it.

Then I had a look at their other tweets, and they mention working on a music site when FKA twigs first came to prominence, and if I recall correctly the tweet implied they didn’t care for LP1 and thought it was overrated.

Edit: Also they’ll probably have heard bits of the singles/videos going in and known what to expect. Which again added to my interpretation of the tweet.

Everything else aside…I have a real aversion to people using phrases like “sixth form drama class” (or “A Levels” when referring to a political/philosophical point). I just find it inherently snobby, particularly against younger people…which is a bit confusing given all the “register to vote” stuff.

This post came across a bit blunter than I meant to sorry - rushed writing it.

As a drama student I feel personally attacked

So I really like this album and it’s also encouraged me to dig into all of her old stuff. Plenty of quality but EP1 is amazing.

Got a ticket for her gig tonight at the last minute. Jumped on the train to Zurich and it’s fuckking cancelled. Bah!

Hope she’s okay and I’ve found a decent looking Chinese restaurant but if rather be watching the show.

Oh bad luck that sounds really annoying for you but, like you say, hope she’s OK.

Would you say that your impression of Zurich is stained by the experience?

Don’t know if this has been posted already. Even if it has what a bloody great performance!

I can’t even believe this is only her second album. It feels like yesterday that I was listening to the newly released LP1.

Regarding Magdalene, home with you’s chorus hits different everytime…!

Been so obsessed with MAGDALENE that it slowed me down picking this year’s Neptune Prize list.

In the second edition of Drowned in Sound’s newsletter, celebrating some of my favourite albums from the last 20 years that I feel more people need to hear, I wrote about its importance to me and maybe the wider world… be curious if this resonates with some of you.
