Yeah, definitely do this, I’m in the process of it myself (I’ve been working through very slowly the past couple years) and I think Yerself Is Steam is my favorite so far. Frittering is such an amazing song. This comparison isn’t exact, but it’s kind of like if you took the sadness of Yoshimi / Soft Bulletin Flaming Lips, fuzzed it out even more than their early 90s stuff, and blew it out to 9 minutes long. Definitely one of my favorite discoveries from this site.

Just finished up listening to another record. Going to start from the beginning now. Looking forward to it.

If you’re willing to invest a little bit of a time in a band, this is almost always the best approach imo tbh tbf :+1:

well tickle me pink. Just finishing up ‘Yerself Is Steam’, brilliant. Started a tad slow but got progressively better with every track. Love the sonic assault of ‘Sweet Oddysee’ and great psychedelic mind fuck of ‘Very Sleepy Rivers’. 20 minutes with a silent stop about 13 minutes right into ‘Car Wash Hair’.

Pretty clever album title too eh? ‘Boces’ up next.

Is anyone else making music like this? I love how explosive those choruses are.

Neither

It’s these sorts of searing insight that makes time on these boards worthwhile.

All these posts have made me revisit the first two MR albums which I haven’t listened to since I bought them on cassette when they were released. They are completely brilliant. I also had Lego My Ego on tape, b sides and stuff, so will check that out again too…

This one can be resolved by considering one simple, if seemingly unrelated, question. How many members of each band have I met in Greggs the morning after a gig?

Flaming Lips: 0
Mercury Rev: 1

Who was it, and more importantly, what did they buy?

I’m gonna guess Grasshopper - Steak bake

In other Grasshopper fast food news, my friend bought a burrito next to him at Green Man a few years back. He was probably on the steak then too. Just headlined the festival, why not treat yourself

My mate would not shut up about it all weekend.

Listened to the album for the first time today. Actually quite blown away by some of it. That totally nuts sleepy rivers track especially made an impression.

Can feel a catalogue binge coming…

Yeah, thanks to this thread I went on a binge of the first three albums. I forgot how great this song is, especially once it fully lifts off.
