Jeeze

There’s a pub in Newcastle that does out of date bottles labelled as ‘Top Shelf Swag’.

Oftentimes chugging down an out of date IPA can be a gruelling experience.

Waffly versatile!

If I never ate anything past its use-by date I’d waste so much food. I don’t mess with meat (that’s what a freezer is for) but:

  • veg is fine until it goes / soft / black / whatever
  • cheese is fine until it goes blue (trickier with blue cheese admittedly)
  • other dairy varies. If it’s not been open long and it smells alright then yeah, go for it.

Milk can be a bit iffy but then we get through about 4 pints every day and a half in our family anyway. Bread suffers past its sell-by date but you can use it for toast / breadcrumbs.

Sniff it, squeeze it, fuck it, cook it, eat it.

TECHNOLOGIC

On Sunday 12th May 2019 I cooked some bacon that not only had a date of Wednesday 8th May 2019, but had been open in the fridge for in excess of a week.

Thought you were about to tell the bacon at Glastonbury story that I’ve heard 10,000 times, here

oh no, I’m saving that one for a much more relevant time, just like I normally do.

Most of our store cupboard stuff is not that old cause we had a food moth infestation and had to get rid of everything. Before that it was ants, which seemed to love stock cubes

Which one is that (so I can avoid…)?

Had a bottle of something by… Pressure Drop that went well past date, it was about 90% foamier than I expected when I opened it without realising.

It is the Tyne down the Ouseburn.

It’s actually a really nice pub if you avoid the dreaded top shelf swag.

I ate a garlic baguette that was 6 days past its sell by date the other day. I’m fine.

most of my spices are pretty out of date

they’re fine though

Not food but still love that I found this in the medicine cabinet at my grandma and Gramps house

no wonder they died, the daft sods

There’s a pretty big margin of error- there has to be, so most stuff is fine for days afterward if it’s properly stored.

I’ve had some interesting food poisoning in my time- always somebody else’s cooking though.
I hate throwing things out when they’re fine, use your eyes and nose and make a decision like an adult.

It’s a good pub and the top shelf swag is CHEAP and sometimes it’s not bad. Worth the risk I say.

Last year there was a ‘50 man brawl’ on the hill next to it and they used it as an excuse to fence it off and it was one of the best places in Newcastle to sit and drink :,(
