my mother has had some food colouring and cake decorating stuff (those little silver balls, sugar flowers, etc) in a box in the cupboard since my brother and i were kids. some of the things are probably over 30 years old. i don’t think she’s made a cake for about 20 years and if she were to make one today i doubt she’d be putting hundreds and thousands on it. they had the kitchen done a few years ago, which would have been a good opportunity to chuck this stuff out and she opted to keep it for some reason.

It’s mostly stuff used once a year, on Shrove Tuesday, to make pancakes. Don’t really do baking so a bag of flour or sugar lasts forever.

Edit: the chocolate was a gift. One day I’ll make myself a hot choc. Will have to wait until next winter now, obviously.

Don’t look at the dates tbh. Sniff it, squeeze it, fuck it, cook it, eat it.

Yes, parmesan for me.

The first time @avery visited my parents house my Mum offered him some lovely homemade apple cake “just cut that bit of mould off first” he did as he was told and is now forever a favourite
My parents did most of the food shopping at silly o’clock at night so they could get all the reduced items. My mum absolutely LOVES a bargain, like, it’s an obsession. But also I’m one of five so feeding us must have been expensive. Anyway, my point is, in my house it was best not to even venture a look at the BBE dates. If it didn’t smell bad and didn’t have visible mould it was edible and if it did have visible mould you’d just slice it off before eating the rest.

Yeah people love saying they’ve got food poisoning for some reason like it’s more impressive than saying they’ve got a stomach bug

I have actually had food poisoning though when I was about 13 from off donner meat. Word of warning if your donner meat is dark brown and tastes slightly fishy maybe don’t eat it. Worst two days of my life.

Anything thats best before and not use by

A friend once asked to use the pepper grinder I kept in my drawer at work so I handed it over but before using it she noticed the expiry date was 2010 and handed it straight back

No. Once it’s cooled you have 3 days, whatever the date was. Cooking nukes all the bacteria, so risk of food poisoning is negligible as long as it’s properly stored.

Surprising. The answer is definitely beer, as anyone who ever attended RoTa in Notting Hill and had a tasty out of date cheap bottle can attest to.

I’d definitely be checking that flour rigorously for mites and the like but otherwise, yeah.

Tea is obviously the right answer here.

Bought a Christmas pudding in 2010 with a date in Feb 2011. Ate it in 2017 and it was obviously delicious.

Mites can turn up any time, they tend to ignore “best before” dates.

Actually had you pegged for, “They’re killed by the baking and just provide extra protein,” answer.

I love a good matured oyster.

Jeeze

There’s a pub in Newcastle that does out of date bottles labelled as ‘Top Shelf Swag’.

Oftentimes chugging down an out of date IPA can be a gruelling experience.
