I dunno, I thought it made sense

win 2 more games = Trophy & direct qualification to UCL (probably)
vs
win 3 more games = no trophy, possibly fail to qualify for UCL / qualify for UCL knockout prelims

On paper that’s completely bang on.

It’s just that binary idea that having both isn’t possible that I take issue with.

(That’s also ignoring the fact that we’ve literally ballsed up every match that we’ve gone into knowing what the rewards would be since the League cup final so it’s extremely risky to put all the eggs in one basket)

Think you’ll find you were outplayed by a lucky deflection

Was so ready for that to be “the line” when it went in, Darmian then falling asleep and Smalling being shit put pay to that though really innit.

given your injury list I’m not sure having both is possible

I mean, it doesn’t look possible now but it was eminently possible before the Swansea match.

Thought Man Utd did alright in the first half hour. That chance the barnacle had where he intercepted the backpass (great) but hit it straight at Cech instead of squaring it to Mata for a tap in (awful).

First goal went in (little bit unlucky) and then got hit for a second almost immediately afterwards = game over.
Basically what happened to Arsenal vs Spurs last week.

Maybe, but you went into that Swansea match with a squad that had - on average - fewer than two knees each

I really want Utd to lose in the Europa too, given Mourinho’s…everything. The arrogance to think they’re just going to walk it so fuck the league. Ooh it makes me angry. They’ve got every chance, it’s a lot easier than our route last year, but Ajax could do them.

It’ll make me so happy.

fuck, I appear to be defending Mourinho

must
stop

Very possible too, they’ve been absolute bobbins without big Zlat.

Aye, it shouldn’t have been a possibility but Liverpool and City both keep conspiring to keep the “race” alive, both sides should be completely out of sight by now.

Beat the champs elect without him in fairness chief…

Not sure about it being between Palace and Hull now. Probably biased in favour of being cynical but it’s hard to see any way for Hull to stay up because we’ve got the tougher fixtures, the fewer points, and rock bottom morale. It’s out of our hands. And after the worst possible pre-season for a premier league campaign, it’s to be deserved really.

Which is frustrating but after seeing what’s happened to clubs like York, Hartlepool, Leyton Orient - teams that I remember us playing regularly back in the day - it’s put things into perspective. It could be a lot, lot worse.

That said I’m still quite worried about the club. Manager almost certain to leave along with the entire coaching staff. 5+ players here on loan who won’t stay - making the squad even thinner than at the start of the season. Long term injury absentees. Players like Maguire/Clucas are certain to go. Owners that can’t sell and desperately want to leave. Fans aren’t able to attend matches because there’s no concessions. Fans protesting at the “membership” scheme. Closing half of the West Stand. Estimated £60+ million debt.

Really have no idea what kind of squad we’ll have, who’ll be in charge, who’ll own it, and what kind of support that will be there. Think we’re in danger of going down again, but there’s hope that new owners come in and money from transfers out is invested well.

different thoughts from the weekend;

If there’s one team you’d want to see concede a goal like Veratti’s it’s Bastia. Disgrace of a football club.

remember thinking at the start of the season how amazing the top six looked and how exciting it was to have such quality managers competing. All of them (bar possibly Man U) have shown flashes of brilliance this season, but after Chelsea and Spurs, they’ve all been distinctly underwhelming overall. Weirdly the table and points total reflects a competitive and excellent top 4/top 6, but they ain’t half trudging over the line.

Really feels like Liverpool/Man U/City/Arsenal are constantly dropping stupid points - but their points tallies and 13 point gap between 7th and 8th mean this can’t be as true as I think it is.

It’s annoying that Mourinho has had a really dreadful league campaign, but will probably be absolved by winning a tinpot domestic trophy, and a European competition, which whilst great, is something that really shouldn’t be seen as a great achievement given Man Utd’s squad/resources against the teams they’ve come up against. Would bloody love it if Ajax beat them in the final, or Celta sprang an upset on Thursday.

I half-like the idea of giving Europa winners qualification to the Champions League, but by doing so it resembles less of a prestigious trophy, and more like football’s Get Out Of Jail Free Card for big clubs who have fucked it domestically. In which case I can actually see English clubs dominating for years to come…

I think something needed to be done to restore prestige to it which is a depressing state of affairs given it’s a european trophy with shitloads of history.

I kind of think that they should maybe have CL qualification attached to it for a bit and then withdraw that aspect. Ultimately I think the 3rd place CL teams dropping into it still undermines the tournament a lot and if they’re not going to change that it’s never going to be taken as seriously as it should be.

You seen English clubs in that competition lately? Even Man United explicitly going for it barely survived going toe-to-toe with fucking Anderlecht.

yeah, just a double in his first season and a place in the CL for next year. Fucking disaster.
