Never a big fan of French press but this little guide just made me realise I’m probably not leaving it in long enough. Always thing 16g for 250ml is wayy to much, think I just like it weak tho

The biggest game changer for me was being told not to put the water straight in after it’s boiled, I’d been drinking burnt coffee for years before then!

Oh. So the term press in a French press is wrong. Should it be called a French sieve?

I’ve never understood the concept of burning coffee with water? Moka pots literally work sending steam through the coffee. Sure, you can burn the coffee at the roasting stage, but it’s not like burning tea leaves on hot water.

That’s not to say coffee doesn’t taste different when brewed at different temperatures.

Yeah but you’re meant to do those really slowly. As soon as water starts boiling turn it right down apparently.

Anyway I just took 10 mins to make a French press and ida much nicer dammit

Can’t use one

  • gritty coffee

  • pita to clean up

  • never tasted as nice as a V60

  • reminds me of visiting my parents

You can just sling the old filter from a V60 or similar straight in the compost/ brown bin

when the kettle boils, pour the boiling water in to one or more mugs

this means that the mugs get warm, the water get slightly cooler

after the mugs are real hot, wait another couple of minutes, then dump the water from the mugs in to the french press

it’s a double win cos the coffee doesn’t get burnt but also it doesn’t cool down as fast after it’s made and in your mug

I am also a skeptic that you can burn ground coffee with water that’s just come off the boil, and I think the Hoff (James Hoffman) concurs

Make one of these every morning. Always eyeball it, absolutely fuck weighing out ground coffee :joy:

I do give the coffee a sprinkle of cold water to protect it from the heat which is definitely a fools errand.

recently got a kettle that you can change the boil temperature on, game changer imo. 90 degrees is perfect.

whaaa? shouldn’t be, you getting the right kind of grind for your cafetiere?

best method imo, only way i can get it in the strength and quantities that i need :smiling_imp:

Not really a fan, for pretty much exactly the reasons @grievoustim gave

The best coffee I’ve ever made at home was with a Hario cloth filter, but even a standard v60 is leagues ahead of a cafetière
