I need to buy a leaving card / start a collection for one of my team. Should I

  • Go and get a card and start the collection now - no time like the present
  • Wait til Monday and pick up a card over the weekend - who starts a collection at 3pm on a Friday?

is that one of them make it yourself kind of affairs?

How do you mean?

I was given it because I always look hungry.

Got absolutely ripped into in the last interview I had for having two years of nothing on my CV, was pretty brutal. Should just make up something vague and fake to put in there.

work is so shit and dehumanising

It really should not be a problem, seems silly to care about a gap more than what you habe actually done.

everything on post-it notes on your monitor

We had someone* who had a gap in their CV because they’d had a prison sentence for a crime they’d not declared on the application form :open_mouth:

I think I’m supposed to ask the question as part of the recruitment process but for me it’s a formality. If someone’s had a break due to childcare, mental health, or they just fancied a break, it makes absolutely no difference to our decision-making process. I’m much more interested in what they have done / are able to do.

*a different department, I should add

That’s not a problem, but accidentally employing someone who jumped before they got pushed, who subsequently couldn’t find work for a while because they were useless is a problem

These days (and for the last 10+ years I think) who gets a successful interview here has those sort of questions asked in a separate interview with HR, which means that managers can just ask questions about their suitability to the role.

I wonder if I could get away with justifying a gap on my CV by saying I’ve been drawing Wikipedia entries on MS paint

That’s really rubbish :frowning:

Anyone want to come help me assemble ikea furniture this weekend in exchange for takeaway and beer

There’s a few gaps in my CV of a few months here and there. The only time I was asked was by some awful corporate company and it was probably the first gap and only two/three months over the summer. I said something about having a holiday and looking for work. They didn’t look impressed.
What do they think I was doing? I was job hunting which is why I’m now sat in an interview. What do they think people do between jobs? Not to mention if you’re on job seekers you’re not supposed to have side projects that get in the way of job hunting (which is stupid in itself but a different point.

I hope no one ever asks what I did in the biggest gap as I doubt being depressed is the sort of thing interviewers look for.

In a pub at central station with a pint of glorious TL en route home from last night. :grimacing::beers:
