Not sure if you’re trolling, but I don’t think bands playing festivals are that shallow at all. Festivals are also a unique chance for bands to hang out with other musicians they might never get the chance to see otherwise.

Well it’s highly speculative cos who knows how gigs would change to adapt in a world without festivals but rich people using their power and resources to organise folks into one place and justify it to the bands as exposure feels wrong to me.

This isn’t what independent festivals are. And the big corporate ones pay bands much more (because nobody wants to be there)

I had tickets for Fflam in 2007 and that had some shadiness going on before it was postponed (“torrential weather”) and eventually cancelled two months later. Can’t find the eFestivals forum discussions on it anymore, but even before the postponement, there were plenty of red flags that were brought up.

in my experience of playing festivals you pretty much always get a much more significant amount of pay that a one off gig or an individual date on a tour. This would probably be the case for every band on the bill bar the headliners on a main stage (you’re talking Foo Fighters, U2, Coldplay etc who could sell out stadiums on their own) and perhaps the ones below them.
