I should clarify that by this I mean the 2 player mode of the vanilla version of 7 Wonders, not 7 Wonders Duel that Eps has mentioned, which is a distinct game.

All the things I listed up there ^ aren’t hardcore at all. If you’re fine with Settlers (which, totes contro, I think is a bit pish), they’re all manageable.

WHAT YEAR IS IT

Hoarding dumplings seems the way to success there. Every time I’ve tried to get sashimi I’ve been blocked. Got so frustrating, I called a new game to try and get rid of the saboteurs.

There was this woefully generically named game called Dungeon Saga that came out last year that is just Heroquest by another name. The whole dungeon crawl sub-genre has had quite the renaissance in recent years, actually.

Finally got round to learning Roll for the Galaxy. It is really excellent, I find myself hankering for a game of it when I’m at work which I don’t normally do with board games (we’ve been playing with two players). The rulebook is bad though, needlessly jargon-heavy.

Got Agricola as a leaving present from my boss - any good?

Roll is excellent. Could go a game right now.

Agricola is a modern classic, it’s great. The designer’s been making iterations on the same game for years now but I really like it. It’s very tight and punishes mistakes.

Cool, I’ll have a go soon. My boss got well excited when I said I played board games, said Agricola would be PERFECT for us because my wife’s family are farmers.

Well if they ever took -3 victory points for going hungry over winter, she’ll feel right at home!!

WHO DARES SUMMON oh hi.

Have they played games before? Any other hobbies/interests you could draw on?

(Catan is the Oasis of boardgames)

main games they play are scrabble and monopoly etc (the Beatles and rolling stones of board games…?)

Im not trying to convert her to a nerd, just that Ive had fun with both those games , plus ticket for ride etc (I think catan and carcassone has more longevity/replayability) cant get too nerdy - didn’t really get the lord of the rings co-op game thing.
Shes a normal person. likes food, drink, films, books, music, long walks in the country etc

People seem to like Carcassonne, could go with that.

I hate it, obviously, but I’m a pain in the arse.

Still haven’t learned this.

Catan is probably the better game, but I’ve spent numerous hours of evenings playing Carcassonne with 'er who can’t be bothered to learn new rules, so that. Also, there are extra rules that you can add on if you’re feeling frisky*.

Not a massively simple question but Catan has the advantage of simplicity in its field.

What I would seriously consider is Pandemic which is a pretty fast game to setup and play with a really clear endgame.

I like Agricola but it falls in that thing of seeming very vast and complex to new players. Catan is in that group to me, really.

Ticket to Ride always gets a lot of love, by the way.

Pandemic is great!
(especially when you work out which the useless roles are and throw those cards away)

I also recommend Pandemic, we’ve also got quite a few of the expansion packs too.

Great game.

Would also say that Istanbul is a good game. It’s a bit complex seeming but flows well. It’s got a lot of luck involved from what I saw, though.

Pandemic IMO
