The scarcity and difficulty are part of the game, IMO. It’s a game about a bleak future where death is everywhere and every encounter is desperate. Without scarcity and difficulty all that’s just a gimmick and has no real consequence. The story is actually quite threadbare: the genius of it is the environmental storytelling, of which the game design plays a massive part.

Listen mode kills the game though, it’s really stupid.

Wrong thread, ffs

Dark Souls 7/10
Super Mario 3D World 8/10
Resident Evil 7 5/10
Bowser’s Fury 9/10

Spits out tea, it’s a 10/10 game if ever there was one.

Bowser’s Fury better than the main game you reckon? Interesting. I haven’t gotten round to it yet but this makes me a bit more excited.

Resi 7 gives me a chub on. Really like it

I think its at best a 1

It’s a tricky one. For a lot of people (me included), it’s an incredible experience which transcends its flaws. But looked at objectively, there are plenty of faults, and about 1/3rd of the game is somewhere between ‘rough around the edges’ and downright ‘ass’…

Dark Souls is often considered to be among the best games ever made.[77][78][79][80][81] Due to its design and philosophy, it is often cited as an essential instance of video games as an art form.[17][82][83] It is also considered one of the most influential video games of its generation;[84] in 2019, GameSpot named it one of the most influential games of the 21st century.[85]

Games cited to have been influenced by Dark Souls include Destiny ,[86] Alienation ,[87] Lords of the Fallen ,[88] The Surge[89] Salt and Sanctuary ,[90] Shovel Knight ,[91][92] Titan Souls ,[91][93] Enter the Gungeon ,[94] The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, [95][96] Nioh ,[97] God of War ,[98][99] and Journey as well as features used on the PlayStation 4 console.[100] Dark Souls was also cited as an inspiration for the television show Stranger Things .[101]

It’s a definite 10.

It is for people who get taken in by the experience and artistic vision, but the risk with strongly committing to a particular vision is that you’ll put some people off. Aside from its artistic merits, there are definite rough spots from a mechanical and level design perspective. It’s not like e.g. Ocarina of Time, which was also amazing as an experience, and had far fewer rough spots as a game.

That list of things it’s influenced doesn’t make it better while playing. No-one has thought ‘Lost Izalith may be completely tedious and is burning my eyes, but did you know this influenced the makers of Titan Souls’.

Nothing should ever be marked down because it won’t appeal to everyone because nothing ever will.

It’s a ten year old game and at the time of release From were a relatively unknown studio. They didn’t have the time or money to make it exactly how they wanted it to be. They still made a game that has influenced gaming culture ever since.

Ocarina – water temple is fucking awful. I’d still give it a 10 though.

Thread got Souls’d

Bu this was one person’s score of the game, not a universal judgement. Surely a game which doesn’t appeal to everyone is going to attract mixed reviews from individual players.

The influence it’s had means it’s absolutely something that’s worth people playing, but that doesn’t oblige everyone who plays it to love it.

Think I justified my 7/10 pretty well here:

There’s no such thing as an objective 10/10. Let’s draw a line under this and move on.

I think so, but it’s also only a 6 hour game which makes a big difference.

This is my plan for every thread I post in.

Fair enough.

Also fair enough. Though if I remember correctly you didn’t play the DLC which would definitely bump it 3 points!
