The camp factor of metal gear often tows a very narrow line between hilarious and goofy espionage and really irritating 4th wall breaking knowing wink wink winks. It has done its whole series. Apart from 5 which never had the chance really

I think 1 and 2 do the best in that regard. Everything after 3 becomes way more hit n miss

All fair comments. The gamecube twin snakes version is by far the best way to play the game, albeit with some matrix-esque bullet time additions to ramp up the cheesiness. The gameplay is vastly updated and it doesn’t feel like it’s pushing the system to its limits anymore.

I played it when it came out. I must have been 13 or 14 and I missed all of the corny and camp aspects to it, taking it all completely seriously. Now I look back, the mgs storyline is a bit daft eh.

I also took resident evil totally seriously too and part of me still does, although my current slog through resi 6 is testing that to its absokute limits

the save systems in MGS always put me off a little bit

never know where I’ll end up when I load it up again

I lent it to a friend when we were about 18. I was 8 or 9 when I first played it. He’d only got into the series when MGS3 came out.
He was somehow in a position at the time where he only had a ps1, with no memory card. So I went round one day and he was having another attempt at completing it in one go.
Seeing him blast through 90% of the game in about 2 hours was something of a shock. 8-year-old me had experienced it as some epic saga. I swear it took me months to complete. God, I must have been proper shit at it.

greatest demo disc ever made

this was me when I got a PS1 - I overlooked this when I got my PS1 as I came from having a Saturn which had built in memory for saves, and it took me a while to save up for a memory card. not a massive problem for playing Formula 1 '97 as I could just do each race as a single race and manually record the results to do a championship, but more of an issue with Resident Evil 2 - basically meant I had to play it without saves, in one sitting. the B scenarios were off limits too for me.

got one of those shite 8 in 1 jobs in the end that kept corrupting and lost my saves half the time :man_facepalming:

RE2 in one sitting. That’s hardcore. Though it’s probably a similar deal and you could also fly through that in about 45 minutes. Bastard speedruns, ruining childhood memories. Beautiful idyllic memories with hordes of zombies and silenced SOCOMs.

it took me a long time to actually be good enough to finish it in one sitting, but then given i only had two games and would have just played it and F1 97 constantly then i got there in the end.

plus i remember having to do RE1 really quick on the Saturn to unlock stuff like the rocket launcher or the key to get alternate costumes, so guess i was used to speed running it a bit before i even knew what speed running was!

It’s probably the origin of speed running tbh. People without memory cards.

Honestly think I’d prefer it if in Fallen Order when you find a crate with a cosmetic item in it, instead you got nothing and it did “FUCK YOU” onscreen like the Dark Souls death thing.

I think I saved a lot just so I didn’t have to do parts of the game over again. And to get all of those inspirational quotes from Mei Ling as well of course.

Haha, I love this! :grinning:
