I don’t think I platinum’d but it’s the only game I was like “yeah I’m going to try and get everything”

Pal came over with his Everdrive 64. It has every N64 game ever released on it. Damn there’s some shit on this console. Playing a lot of the Japan only games, sooo many bad beat em’ ups.

The overwhelming majority of the N64 library is utter turgid shite

Bad games back then had a nasty habit of being truly unplayable and far more abundent than they did in any other generation.

When i finally beat the last colosseum challenge after way too many hours and probably taking a few years off my life, it one of the most genuine jumping out of my chair and fistpumping moments i’ve had. Stupidly, stupidly difficult.

There’s not that many games released on it. Like, there’s obviously more shovel ware on ps1 and 2 but there’s a far greater number of actually great games. It just seems like the ratio on n64 is heavily leaning in favour of shite

This train sim is kinda cute

Edit: oh god we played Daikatana. It’s. Just. Nawwwww

I’ve been gathering PS1 games for my new handheld and honestly, outside of nostalgia, I’m not sure how many actually great games there are. Fired up Tomb Raider II the other day and jfc, steering Lara is like trying to reverse park a bus.

THPS2, Tekken 3, MGS, the Final Fantasies… all great. Then there’s shit like Cool Borders and and World Cup 98 and Smackdown Know Your Role I’ll rinse for fond memories, but are there a bunch of actual iconic games I’m missing?

Playstation 1 is probably the biggest console with the fewest classic games on it, and even those were better on other platforms.

I think it’s also the console with the largest library of utter dross as well. The amount of unplayable shonky ‘3D’ games that were thrown out on it is staggering.

No offence but that’s absolute bollocks. Loads of ps1 multi platform games were horrid on n64, and if you’re into RPGs, platformers, and horror games then the ps1 is a goldmine.

MGS, Silent Hill, Resident Evil 1-3, Final Fantasy 7-9, Suikoden 2, Breath of Fire 4, Parasite Eve, Tony Hawks, Spyro, Ridge Racer, Ape Escape, Grandia, Policenauts, Tekken 3, Wipeout 3, Valkyrie Profile, Klonoa, Vagrant Story… the list goes on.

Sure there’s a lot of shit on it too. But I’m always finding new stuff to play on PS1 that kinda pushes games in odd new ways at the time and hold up. But again, mostly RPGs and proto-cinematic adventure games.

I’m counting PC and also Saturn/Dreamcast as other platforms, too and amongst those I can’t think of an RPG or horror game that I’d buy/emulate a PS1 to play.

Also, I’m talking about in context of its time. Obviously there are easier ways to play FF7-9 today, but they’re still very much designed with that original hardware in mind.

I keep finding cool US and JP only games for it and loving them. Like Parasite Eve and Policenauts.

Edit: I can’t think of a single ps1 game that was better on Saturn. Maybe some of the the 2d fighters. Dreamcast got like, tomb raider, shadow man, soul reaver and some other guff cross gen. nothing exciting.

No you’re probably not missing much if you’re not into RPGs. PS2 has aged better and has more modern curios that hold up. But I still say that ps1 has way way more games that are still decent than Saturn and N64.

Play mischief makers that’s a hidden gem

I’m one of those people who thought the Playstation FFs were a significant step down from the Snes ones, that Resident Evil was unplayable until RE4, and who thought MGS was half-baked when compared to the likes of Thief, so I don’t think you’re going to be able to convince me.

Oh and Goremons Great Adventure

That’s all a big yikes from me. And also, sorry, I’ve had a few cans and I’m quite into old guff that nobody should really care about tbh. Also that MGS take is just… Thief and MGS are both good for different reasons.

Also FF7 is better than FF 4 and 5, but maybe on par with 6.

I can appreciate MGS for what it is now: an over the top graphical novel with slightly ropey bits of gameplay in between, but it still does little for me.

It’s come up in other threads before but I think 6 and then 5 and 4 are the peaks of the FF series by a fair stretch.
